Misfire on Cyl 1 & 6

Just as the title suggests, I've experienced two instances where both Cylinders 1 and 6 misfire. The engine lugs along and return to normal after stopping and starting the engine. It was caused, in both cases, by an aggressive heel-toe downshift. Has anyone else experienced this? I know ignition coils are a weak point on the S54 so my guess is that 1 and 6 are on their way out. I'm just curious if anyone has experienced this issue, too.

The early coils were a problem, the newer revised ones which are in all z4s are pretty standard.

Swap coils and plugs to 4 and 5 see if it happens again.

Ah. I didn't realize that the Z4Ms were getting the new coil variety.

I was going to do that after the second time it happened but I decided to get on the road instead of doing more open track time. I'll just have the dealership replace 'em and see if the issue presents itself again. I have to bring my car in for Inspection I anyway so I'll just let them know about the issue.

I had a coil on cylinder 3 go in the fall. I think from now on I am going to start taking the plastic coil cover off for track days to get some extra cooling to them

Is it heat that gets them?

I can't remember where I read that but yea thats what I heard. Also every time I see an s54 in race trim they never have the cover on. Maybe O-cha can chime in here?

They have the cover off mainly for access I would bet, not sure if heat kills coils or not, but I'm going to guess no, not at those levels anyway.

To be honest ignition systems aren't a forte of mine, spark plugs I'm much better at.
