No Speed Limiter

Has anyone removed his speed limiter yet? I will take my car to Germany and I do not want to be limited to 130mph!

I did euro delivery, and hit the limiter at 155 mph on the A5 autobahn. Now do they put a "new" limiter on when your car comes back into the US, or do they just forget about it? Since we have had the crappy weather, I have not taken it past 110mph, so I'm not sure. Is there anybody that took thier Euro delivery E90 PAST 130mph?

FYI - The speed "limiter" that some hear are referring to [taking off, putting on, etc.] is in reality just a couple of lines of code in the car's computer that tells the fuel pump to shut off after the car reaches a predetermined speed.

Also, while it is true that the different top speeds between sport/non-sport cars are down to the tire ratings, the 'W' rated tires that the 330i SP ships with are rated to 168MPH.

So BMW AG, why the 155MPH limit?

155 mph is by agreement of the German manufacturers excluding Porche. It is intended to apease the Green party.

Did you remove the limiter? It's supposed to kick in at 130 for non-sport e90s...

Mine has also hit 150 on a closed course. And it is definitely non-sport so I have no clue what they are referring to about speed limiting.

Mine stopped accelerating at 135mph, so there is definitely a limiter. espo89 is correct, you'll want to change your tires to Z rated before attempting this.

I believe the speed limiter is much like the rev limiter... It will cut off the fuel flow from the engine so you can't accelerate anymore. If you are going downhill or accelerating really hard, the momemtum of the car could carry you past the limit (I don't think it will actually apply the brakes?) much like the rev limiter isn't going to stop you from making a money shift..

I think the actual number is 139 MPH... so "getting close to 140" would basicly hit it.

If the speed limiter is just a short software thing, so does anyone know if you can change it. Is there anyone from BMW AG. out there who knows the answer?

That's something that could only be done by an aftermarket company (like UPsolute).

I've heard that some US dealers will remove it for you if you ask real nice and say "please."

Has anyone checked their speedometer against a GPS device? I feel like my car isn't going as fast as the speedometer indicates. For example, on my commute today I was driving along at around 85 - 90mph on the interstate according to the speedo, and people kept passing me. I mean every 15 -30 seconds another car would pass me. That shouldn't happen at 85 - 90mph.

I don't think that acceleration can have "momentum"... as soon as the force is removed (throttle) the car will immediately begin to slow down ... I'd buy that you might still be accelerating if going downhill, but it'd have to be pretty steep for gravity to overcome the wind resistance at 155mph.
