Hmph
I bought my car from this dealer. Thankfully, they have not made much money off of me yet (got the car at 2.5% over invoice; sold my trade-in elsewhere; have bought accessories elsewhere). This kind of treatment will make me avoid it for everything but scheduled maintenance and cut-and-dried warranty claims -- which I was going to do anyway since it's, you know, a dealer, but I digress ...

When I had a wreck last summer, airbag deployed and needed an alignment. Body shop sent it out to dealer for electrical service and alignment. Both of those services showed up on the car fax. I'm thinking there is a link for the service paperwork to the reporting. While it sucks that it happened, they might have done you a favor. Assuming the repair is of quality. Just have them take the inner panel off. You will be able to see if it was repaired or not.

Why would this necessarily generate a Carfax report? The dealer is under no obligation to report this to Carfax and part of the deal here (in writing, of course) should be that they are NOT going to report this to Carfax. That takes care of the whole diminished value issue unless, of course the entire door was replaced and the VIN numbers don't match.

I had a dealer run my X5 into a wall while in for an oil change. It took them many weeks to replace the bumper and fender. I asked them to buy the car from me at market value, but they wouldn't do it. I settled for an extended warranty on the vehicle, and I made sure their work was perfect. Do not settle for anything less than what makes you happy.
With regards to the Carfax thing, what the dealer is saying is true. Some dealers link their service records with Carfax. Even if it doesn't show an accident, it might show something like "passenger door replaced." It's to your benefit to keep anything like that off the books. |
