Damn I wish they sold the 135i the states. The USA's allergy to hot hatches drives me insane. The GR Corolla is a step in the right direction at least.

Suprised by the differences between the 2.
  • Fake and real sound more pronounced in the 135i. A bit too much in the cabin (fake) but genuine pops and bangs when driving on the outside. No pops on the 235i. I instantly missed the pops when getting back into my car.
  • 135i steering is very heavy, like a Mini Cooper, the 235i is much lighter and seems more “pointy”.
  • Traction - I lost traction twice in the 135i (oversteering), could be the rubbish Potenzas. Haven’t lost traction in my 235i with PS4s tyres.
  • Gearing, thought it’d be the same, but the 135i seemed to hang at high revs, even with the gearbox in drive vs sport. The shift up in auto mode (in normal - not ragging it driving) seemed to be just over 3k revs, in the 235i it’s more 2-2500 and feels a bit smoother.

It sounds like you enjoy the driving experience of the 2 more than you do the 1, is that an accurate interpretation?

I was trying not to be biased towards my car, but obviously failed!

I liked them both, but just suprised how different they are.

**Should probably add, I read the pops and bangs I thought were real on the 135i are actually fake. Had me convinced in the cabin but..

Strange, our i235 M Gran Coupe is all about pops and more pops in sports mode. Especially when dowhshifting. I will have to turn off the cabin piping to see if they are real.

Assuming you are in the US? I’m from the UK and it’s really frustrating. The 2019 version of the 235i has pops and bangs, 2020 onward don’t due to regulation changes in the EU.

In the EU at least (M135i) the bang on up shift and pops in downshift are fake.

I definitely think the 1 series is prettier at the rear but the 2 series looks far better head-on
