DIY brake ducts
So, I followed the ideas of a few other forum members and did the 3 inch flange attached to the back of the front caliper along with the flex hose . I put temp strips on the calipers and the ducts worked fine, but after 5 track days they had worn through on the lowest point ( curbs?)....so I am trying a shorter hose strapped to the top of the lower control arm. I will test this shortly....meanwhile I am working on a naca duct design, probably using a 2.5 inch hose

The opening faces forward so air blows into the duct , at high speed and exits at the caliper/ rotor....more air will dissipate heat and avoid brake fade. I just got back from Barber and they worked great.

Hey Twt, would like to revive this thread.
The brakes are definitely the weak point on this car. Where are you now with your brake cooling fix? Anyone else tried some other brake cooling rigs? Thanks. |

-The brakes get extremely hot, my rotors are cracking (looks like they’ll need to be replaced after 10 track days). -I destroyed a set of front RS29s in three days. They just started crumbling, I’m guessing from the heat. -I do get some fade 2/3 into the session with SRF fluid and PFC 08 pads. Have to back off a little for a lap, and the fade goes away. -The heat also drives my tire pressures and temps up more than I’d like (10-12psi, 215F+) during a hard session. This makes beginning and end of session tire management kind of a pain. |

It's hard to give or get empirical data on this since all of us drive differently, live in various parts of the country and have different track set ups. All that I do know is that virtually every high end track car and most race cars use brake ducts...so they must be necessary and functional. I hit my brakes very hard, at least that's what my data says, but I don't stay on them very long....in my M the temp strips tell me I am not overheating the brakes and fade only appears when I go back to back. My pads always wear evenly ( on my third set) and don't show signs of excessive heat.

I have done some research into this topic as well because I have a 2017 BMW M2 (my first M car) and plan to use it as DE car for my wife in South Florida. I agree some kind of brake ducting would be essential (my 911 turbo has from the factory) ; My race car also uses brake blowers as well which would help, so I will be looking into incorporating them as well. Wish there was room in from fascia to have front mounted air duct.

My shop is going to add Porsche GT3 style brake duct spoilers to the car this or next week. Will let you all know how they do on the road and at Watkins Glen next week.

Here are some pics. My shop (RRT outside of D.C.) made some modifications to the GT3 brake spoilers and my backing plates. Testing it out at Watkins Glen this weekend.

I don't have an exact part number, but it's a standard part for a GT3. In my research it seems like guys with all types of cars make this same modification to keep their brakes cooler, and you can find knock offs on eBay for cheap.
For any application I've seen, there is some cutting of the spoilers to clear everything when turning lock to lock. Cutting the dust shield allows the newly directed air to make it to the rotor. Also, the stock front lip has some small air flow cuts that line up nicely with the spoilers. |

Assuming those are the 997GT3 brake ducts, and they look like they are...you can get them pretty cheaply online: https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/PKGT3FRS.html
https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...2SEaAnVu8P8HAQ Do you know what RRT did to modify them? Looks like they just cut a gap to allow for the tie-rod...They are pretty flexible from when I installed them on my 6GT3...you could bend them pretty easily. |
