I got 26..had no idea what a spud gun was, the Otto thing or that Steam engines can run on anything...I don't know about that last "anything" term. So, if you put gas in a steam engine it will make steam from gas and run?

Yes an engine that uses the production of steam to produce movement can run on anything.

If you think of a train or nuclear submarines power plant.

So yes using gas to heat the water would produce the steam to power vehicle.

Full house for me. Was listening to Radio 4 today programme and they had a report on the Combined Cadet Forces. I spent my CCF days in REME so that might explain my success...

Managed 29 and I'll still argue that the electrical demands are supplied by the battery firstly, not the alternator. Dodgy question that one!

Full house. Happened to know the Otto question/answer. I'd argue that Diesel engine is more gives better mpg due to its thermal efficiency, but ho hum.

Their answer is correct. You can start the engine, disconnect the battery and the engine will keep running. A lot of race cars work on a similar principle by having a very small battery onboard, a larger battery is connected to start then and then disconnected by the 'crew'.

When you bump start a car with a flat battery, you're just bypassing the requirement of electricity to crank the engine over, once started, the engine while generally keep on running using the electricity generated by the alternator.

Also, if you've ever had a faulty alternator, you will find you don't actually get very far on battery power alone.

Spud gun uses compression to fire the spud, like a piston in a cylinder. They also said "pinging" when they meant pinking, unless pinging is an American term. Rest of it was a piece of piss.
