Calling out to 07 328i's

Hey I've been having some issues with my car and I wanted to know if I'm the only one. When I 1st started filling my tank; I was getting 400-450 miles per tank. Now by both using the trip reset and number of gallons; I'm only averaging about 250-300 or so miles per tank. Is everyone else experiencing this or is it just me?

And is there a problem with my car? There's no way it should have dropped this far right?

I got the same issue. I attribute it to driving softly under break in.

I don't get the drop though; it makes no sense. Even if I'm driving more aggressively, when full the tank should be at 400ish miles; not 250. I don't care if my mpg dropped; it shouldn't affect the full capacity of my tank--> which is why I'm concerned that something is wrong or I'm getting ripped off at the gas station.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding or you are but MPG directly affects miles per tank. If the fuel capacity is 15 gallons, at 30 MPG on the highway the miles/tank is 450. In the city at 20 MPG it's 300 miles/tank. Simple math.

Thanks, Mike.

Most of my driving is rural highway, 65 mph or so, and I average almost 30 mpg there. When I do more in-town driving, my mileage goes down a lot.

Mike, I get your point, but when it fills up shouldn't it always be 450 miles? I am doing a lot more city driving, but when the tank is full it shouldn't change. MPG could change and that would affect how fast the gas is burned through, but tank capacity is always 16 gallons and should carry me about 400ish....

My last 2 -3 tanks full only went about 250-300 miles; so I guess city driving sucks =(.

No. The "miles to empty" (aka range) indicator is not a fuel gauge. It calculates your range based on your fuel level is and your average MPG. Obviously, your range depends on your MPG. If your last 2-3 tanks only went about 250-300 miles, your car will not expect to get 400ish miles on your next tank. If your average MPG goes up, your range will too.

I see your point now. Lassaxi's post is spot on. When you reset the miles to empty display the new figure is calculated based on the previous tank's MPG.

Thanks, Mike.

I went from 25mpg average to 28mpg average by the time I hit 19k miles. With both my MINI and BMW, fuel economy started to imrpove around 10k miles.

I calulate fuel economy by mileage & gas pumped, not with the car's computer.

The range depends on the average MPG you run after the last reset. So when you were getting 400ish, it is probably because your MPG has not settled in the right figures yet. Now that you use the car more, the MPG is more accurate, then the range will show a figure that is the same as the MPG you are getting.

I'm getting a consistant 26-27 MPG, calculated with a calculator not by the computer of in city driving using regular fuel. Tried premuim numerous times but saw NO DIFFERENCE.

To calculate fuel consumption using amount of gas pumped, I do the following things:

1) pump gas to full
2) reset trip meter to zero
3) use the car till near empty or in the last 1/4 tank
4) fill up again till full and note the total gas pumped and use that figure and compare it to trip meter.

IMHO, this is more accurate, and will give you your exact consumption on that tank of gas.
