I'm not telling you how to modify your car, but, its kind of silly to have a boost gauge on a chipped 335i.
Currently we're on stock turbo's. Got to start somewhere.

Here is my boost guage/onboard diagnostics computer....
Its removable in 2 seconds (slides into a clip that is clipped around the trim peice, not the vent.. its very secure), and also has wifi, bluetooth, gps, and of course its all touchscreen...

while having a car-pc or tapping into the dash/display is an excellent use of existing technology, one has to figure out the backend of the system (i.e. where the signals are coming from). Do we use our own wires/sensors? That's the easy way. Or do we tap the OBD-II port? That's the hard way but the smarter way of doing it. Assuming you've figured out how to tap the i-Drive there is much more to figure out.

Having a separate computer to do this stuff is cool but expensive as a boost gauge/display option. I would like to hear more feedback from you guys regarding this route. My expertise is not with electrical engineering stuff.

Great stuff so far, so far the easiest and most straightforward seems to be the vent although I already realize not everyone likes this option it at least seems to generate the most general appeal.
i don't think there is any guage that will look "stock" the guage mount goes ontop of your steering wheel column and it doesn't block anything such as your speedo and rpm guage. you can get the guages to glow orange too like the oem bmw so that infront of the cluster i think is the best solution. personally i am not a fan of those a pillar pods and the clip on on the ac vent looks neat but to me, i want my ac to blast in full lol. just doesn't seem the right place for a pod.

that is the Asus R2H which is a UMPC. I would like to know what software you are using and what type of connection you are using to get that reading?

It's the original software from Vishnu ( PROcede Reader v1.01 ). Connection is via serial port.

Due to the size of the vents I suspect that a 45mm boost gauge would work better.

+1. I'd like a boost gauge, AFR meter and knock monitor. Maybe these can be done over bluetooth and be presented on a PDA screen? BTW, did BMW not provide a boost gauge because they didn't want customers making their own determinations as to what normal pressure ranges are supposed to be?

Evoscan does not use standard OBDII commands, nor CAN protocols as you have already stated. It uses Mitsu's own protocol called MUT. As you learned, its a very fast protocol for such a simple little processor. Frankly, I'm surprised you were able to get Evoscan to work with your M3. I didn't know that it had any OBDII compatibility.

There's a free MUT logger for the Evo as well over on www.aktivematrix.com If you were interested, I'm sure he'd give you the source code.

I believe one of the main guys is MalibuJack on evolutionm.net. He's seems like a pretty cool guy so, I'm sure he'd be willing to help out.

Regarding the vents. I called up my local dealership that informed me these are on "backorder". This means neither dealerships nor warehouses carry this item in stock. I will keep looking into it and see if I can get an update soon. This vent (the driver side vent part number: 64229130445) is pricey too. I was quoted $65.

Regarding Evoscan, I have written Hamish (the developer) emails and he claims it would be fairly easy to get it to work with BMWs. This however is a larger task than I think he believes. I have not gotten Evoscan to communicate with my E46 M3 and as it stands it will not work for the simple reason that the protocols are different and the software is programmed for MUT. Having very limited knowledge regarding OBD protocols, I have played around with free loggers and other types of software. Most are too slow for our use, however I believe if you're only looking for something that will output boost, this is definitely doable.

Is MJ (and/or MalibuJack) familiar with any other vehicle protocols? I know right now Hamish (Evoscan) is achieving Subie compatibility...

I bought the vdo gauge that most people put in audi/VW's for a boost gauge in the AC vent, but it didn't fit inside of the driver's side vent in our car. To make it fit I would have had to cut into the dash trim so I just ended up mounting it to the fake vent on the top of the dash. I would be interested in a vent mount though if someone came out with one.

I'm certainly interested in this. I just finished the last of the planned mods and need an "unplanned" mod

Stupid HPF Mickey Mouse Ears gauges on the M3 Turbo. Looks like a stupid 80s TransAm/Mustang setup you would find.

personally i think that guage setup is sick. m3 turboed pushing 550+. carbon fiber with matching lights. in view and not blocking anything. plus the paddles give an accent to the entire look along with the rest of the interior giving it a true race car appearence minus the sponsor stickers and widebody. m3 will always be

(boost oil pressure etc etc......)
