This test mule looks like a civic. It has halogens and classic front drive proportions with the front wheel arch right next to the door.

That's why I have bought a Lotus. 😊

Ah, thanks - no big surprise there - thought I had read somewhere they were considering bringing it here. Guess I'll stick with a new GTI in a couple years for when snow and road salt scare the M2 into the garage for winter.

I also like the tug in the wheel I feel on my wife's Accord when I hit the gas, how hard can that be to duplicate, BMW?"

The only transmission option will be a 10 speed automatic developed in conjunction with FCA Group and pulled from the now defunct Chrysler 200. When asked about this decision, BMW execs said, "the consumer want more numbers and letters, so a 10 speed transmission is always better than 8, and an M245.75i Sport Xdrive will be perceived as more valuable and exclusive than a simple 230i."

This story is developing...stay tuned for more.
Painfully accurate, and a reminder why I'm likely not going to be buying another BMW for a long time to come (until everyone has to drive an electric mememobile)

How long until all the non Ms are FWD 4 bangers with plastic cladding?

This is definitely the car to get, especially if available with a manual. To hell with the G20!

This will be a good option for people who want a new BMW 4 door sedan but don't want to spend a bunch. There are plenty of people who get BMWs and don't care about the driving experience. Counter intuitive I know, but they are the majority of customers.

What a stupid concept. Get it for the bigger cars but if BMW's intention was to separate 2 door and 4 door cars with their even and odd number scheme, why add 4 doors to every even number? Totally dilutes what they wanted.

Agree, its the perfectly replacement for the 320i buyers (no offense)

Bmw needs to stop reacting to the market and continue to innovate.

This just be a reaction response to the RS3 which bmw will never match. M2 with rwd and the s55 is the real deal. Don't cock it up with this four door abomination.

Then again...the former head of Audi is now the M boss. What an epic story it'll be if he cripples bmw from inside out and dooms the company, then is welcomed back to hero's welcome to VAG.

Even if it were RWD, this car is simply too small for my needs... Just like the A4/S4/RS4 is too small.

So a 235i will become a 4 banger, and the 2er will no longer be RWD but be FWD like the next 1er... Im officially confused
I assume the coupe and vert will remain RWD with the 40i designation.

Yet more evidence of high-velocity diversion of American and European thinking. FWD BMWs will ensure its survival. You want them to die!

Maybe time to launch an "AMW" spin-off?

well, at least half this forum will be happy with Audi-like BMWs! Apparently, not having a hot-hatchback with 400 bhp is crippling BMW.

This way, they'll get it. Although the Audi man will have to show BMW how to build high output fours, because obviously BMW has no fucking clue.

OMG all the hate. This today is a non-existing BMW. How can it be a negative for BMW to add a NEW option. Don't like it don't get it. They are not stopping making anything that today is RWD.

I've driven the X1 and it's a much better SUV than the predecessor RWD one. People don't care about driving that type of car at 10/10ths.

Eventually, yes, they probably will. But the time to get on board and start the process was five years ago... not five years from now.

Actually, this is a very legitimate point. I've touched on this possibility in the past as well. Optional AWD is a feature of all modern premium vehicle architectures, and when it comes to EVs, AWD is always done using multiple motors (at least one in front and in back). With such a setup, you can also accommodate FWD, RWD, and AWD. Now, most probably, all EVs will migrate to AWD eventually since it has packaging benefits (weight distribution being a big one), but it can still be tuned for a rear bias, including performance oriented enthusiast setups and driving modes.

The coupe (G42) will remain and will remain RWD, yes. The convertible (G43) has been canceled.

While there will be a G8x M2 (probably S58 powered, but we cannot rule out a high output 400hp+ B58 yet), there will be no I6-powered model below it. Instead, although it has not yet been confirmed, there will likely be a four cylinder M Performance model with at least 300hp to replace the current 335hp M240i.
