I hit a pothole for the very first time ...
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com Air blew out immediately out of tire. Dashboard went amber. Really poor tire, so soft and vulnerable to any damages. Obviously tire goes to trash, new is on order. Around $310 for single piece. |

You seem to have been very lucky as the rim itself appears completely undamaged. Are you sure it was a pot-hole?

I wouldn't though hitting pothole would cause such damage to tire.. Car has just 3500 kilometers on clock.. Such bad luck. Last edited by mariopl; 05-28-2019 at 06:15 AM.. |

What size rims you have? 19, 20 or 21?

sorry about the loss... The low profile of the 21" certainly did not help to avoid this. On the bright side, I guess at least you had the RFT to keep you going to a safe place.

Why do you think so? I was wondering if I should go for 2 tires or just one. I though 3500km is not that much, there are still small sticks on tire side. One tire is not enough? |

3500Km is debatable.. If it would be miles, I would say change both. (Quick-read the post, and my mind saw 3500 miles... As a Dutch guy, go figure.. ) But if they haven't been worn that much, you can go for 1 tire.. Probably..

Dang, road around where I live are not great...I would have preferred a 19", but ended up getting the 20" rims and I sweat bullets when I drive.

Don't know about elsewhere.....But guys if you hit a pot-hole in the UK and it has damaged just tyre or both Tyre & wheel, take a picture and size & depth of the offending hole and damage done, then put in a claim......albeit it does take months to process but eventually you will win your claim. My youngest son did it when he damaged his off-side rim & tyre on his Audi S3.

In my 10 years career of driving - it has happened for first time. 2 years ago I hit a spike and it got into tire causing the pressure to lower from time to time. It was super easy to repair (runflat). Albeit, this time I wasn't that lucky.. |

This just happened to me, going 50km/h and went over a pot hole and side wall burst on the 718 21s.
Luckily i have tire warranty so took it in right away. Tire went to 0 PSI, is it ok to drive on it like this, i drove about 15 kms to the dealer, rim looks undamaged. Had a nail in the rear last month, so glad i got the tire warranty |

...and I got a nail on my rear RFT...cant be repaired...has to be ordered. Only 700 miles on the tire and will cost $378 total. No tire warranty.... Here's the kicker, nail was in the center of the tire, had it not been RFT, it would have been a $50 repair. Oh, well.

I think the tire saved you from purchasing new rim, so its not soft as you say.
think about the force and weight on impact. if you had wheel/tire insurance you would be cover 100% for rim and tire. Not sure if this is available in EU |

Edit: I suppose if you got the nail, went immediately flat, and used the RFT feature to get to the tire place then the tire might sustain more damage and be unusable after that. If it was just a slow leak, RFTs are a pain to mount but should be patchable. |

Yes, about center. Doggone dealer looked at it and stated they cant repair RFT, they replace. Already got it replaced....lesson learned for next time. BTW, no issues with RFT feature--it worked as designed. Went as low as 20 PSI, but was able to make it to the dealer with no issues. Sorry for high jacking this tread...but it's on topic
