Just sold my E70, looking for E90 M Sport

Hi everyone,

My first time at E90/E91/E92 post section.

I just sold my 2012 X5 M Sport:

And for this summer and maybe next winter, I would like to get a 2009-2011 335i M Sport.

I would like to know if it is a good car to buy? What about the reliability of this car?

Thank you !

I like that E70, why did you sell it? How was it to own? I've never driven one, but I've heard they handle better than they have any right to given their size and weight.

There was a switch from the n54 to n55 motors in the timeframe you're looking at for the E90s, so take that into account. Basically, n54=more power, n55=more reliable.

Thank you guys.

I sold it because I was looking for a Macan GTS or E70 X5M, but for the moment I will wait a little bit before to buy one (in a year maybe).

Heum... is the 2011 335i M pack has the N54 or N55 ?

Because I really love the look of the 2009-2011 M Pack.

Having owned two X5s myself (one 3.0i E53 2005, and now owning 2011 35i), it is interesting to see you asking about reliability of the 335i coming from an X5! Trust me, if you could handle the X5 reliability, you should have no worries with 2011+ 335i!

Last question about 335i, any difference about the transmission?

Automatic (paddle shift) vs Manual Transmission: Is one betters than the other one or its no importance? (I don't know if it is clear lol)

Automatic one is ZF tranny - it's IMHO faster than you can shift manually on 6MT (without burning clutch that is), but 6MT would be more fun to drive (and can handle more torque if you plan heavy modding). These are completely different beasts. Reliability wise ZF is descent tranny - but as all automatics require maintenance. In the long run 6MT is more reliable and easier to resell, but when in heavy traffic in daily driving - auto tranny wins

the manual would probably be a bit quicker with a proper driver, but its close in terms of overall efficiency and performance.

what mileage are you at? I would recommend a transmission fluid service+pan filter replacement and a walnut blasting closer to 100k.

Please note... I said 2011+ as my experience has been only with N55 engine. I have personally specifically avoided N54 engine in all my BMWs that I bought. (2007 328i was a choice for me over the twin turbo N54 335i). Not putting down the N54, as it has loyal followers and people love their performance. But reliability wise, well, see the above threads that people are saying you should read.

I owned the 535i in manual transmission. I love manuals but in California with the stop/go traffic, well, changing gears manually lost its appeal pretty quickly. Plus, BMWs automatic especially in sport mode works fantastic (in my opinion), and going forward I will not be buying another manual as my everyday car.

Only thing that makes n55 more reliable is just less frequent walnut blasting needed, no?
Mine has had 1 injector and wastegate actuators replaced and it's the earliest n54 with feb 07 prod date. I never had hpfp problems either, just a lpfp sensor issue.

This^ should be put as a sticker note to 99% of noobs dreaming of manual tranny lol. Realization that they made not the best choice - comes too late.
Raised in eastern europe where all we had were manuals - everywhere from bikes to buses lol. Try driving manual in heavy traffic for 20 years and you'll quickly get gag refelx anytime you hear someone talks about 6MT lol
However, I can't blame US folks - their experience is exactly opposite

My driving experience: including 2010 e90 328i Sport Package (auto w/ paddle shift) and 2011 e92 335i Sport Package M-Sport Suspension (auto w/ paddle shift) - I see no value in manual transmission.

Yeaaaa no.

I've been driving stick since I was 17. I've driven in a daily 60 minute commute in bumper to bumper traffic in downtown Chicago and downtown Toronto for many years with a manual. It doesn't bother me one bit, in fact I found it easier in a manual: I don't have to ride the brake all the time and instead, just clutch in and coast or re-engage 1st to let it crawl up to speed, coast again. Repeat.

I have far too much fun with a manual transmission in every other scenario to ever give a shit about wishing for an automatic just because of my commute. The one time I had an automatic car I sold it in 2.5 months. Not even that 5.5L supercharged E55 AMG could keep me engaged/happy with a boring slushbox.

I used to have an E70 4.8 2010 sport, and was searching for a F10 335, but ended up finding a nice E90 335i msport 2011 N55 engine
Both are good cars and reliable some how
But am enjoying a lot the 335, fun all the time

Wow really love your 335 !

Correct me please, but all 335 has N54 engine right? Why do you have the N55 engine?

Well, it's clear you didn't take your own advice and read the above threads because the N55 is just a weaker, cheaper version of the N54. Way to spread false information based on personal feeling and not quantitative facts.

^This! So much this! MF

The majority of the people who say they don't miss a manual transmission are people who lack the gracefulness required to drive a manual smoothly during both upshifting and downshifting. If I ask them if they know how to heel-and-toe they will probably think I am talking about a dance move. Those that say yes will most likely have no practical experience with the technique and are incapable of, or completely terrible at, rev matching.

I would genuinely care to know how many of the persons who say they don't miss a manual transmission use their shifter hand to constantly peruse their phone or drink coffee during their commute. Most people are so busy doing something other than driving while in the driver's seat that it is truly frightening. Because paying attention to just driving when driving is too single tasked for today's world.

Not to mention, I am fairly confident when I say that there are definitely people who take the slow, congested lane home on purpose to afford themselves that extra 10 to 20 minutes of alone time where they don't have to deal with their monster children that they "love more than anything" but secretly want to get away from because they are driving them insane.

Anyways, some people are just so full of it and have unknowingly created excuses to justify why they are so lame. And the best part is... their false reasoning is so convincing that they are now in complete denial.

Dude, OP! Stop being a tool and read the responses to your questions. This has already been answered in this thread.

Not to mention you obviously didn't read this...

LMAO, I hate that excuse people have LOL:

"I bought an automatic because I sit in traffic all day"

Trying to justify their regrets...

I too drove manuals all my life and I bought an auto Lexus CT200h thinking that I wouldn't miss the 3rd pedal, boy was I wrong. Got rid of that POS and back in multiple manual BMWs since then.
