If anything that does not come standard is modding, then every driver in the world is a modder and modding therefore looses all significance.

Msport is not an option in the US. If you are paying money to change out parts that came on the original car you are modding it.

Then sorry RGRAY, I do believe your car is modded... it didn't come from the factory like that (I am assuming you got them from Passport)

I agree, anything not factory is a mod. You're adding things on to modify the form of your car from how it was produced...applies to all things big and small, OEM or aftermarket or DIY

Right, plus once the car has a chip/scratch/dent = MODDDDDDDDDDD

That,s my point- the cars in the end (the Euro one vs the NA one) are the same-an artificial delineation isn't it

Chips/scratches/dents are not...boils down to intention. Did you intend to put that chip on the hood? If yes, then its a mod!

Sure there okay, so my euro headlights are not a mod.

So let's try to see if we categorise: options, retrofit and mods.

I would tend to think that if its on the BMW accessory guide, it ain't a mod no matter who installs it, dealer, you, or a member of the Quand familly

If you get a part not designed to be on your car (clear lights and Euro lights are illegal in NA and therefore would fall under this category) then I would agree it is a modd. Note that Msport is designed to be on the car, just not offered here, so not modd.

Not sure what retrofit would be, perhaps for example the post September software update

God I love having too much time on my hands at work in the summer.

This thread is pretty funny.. there's basically two camps, one that takes pride in being "modded" and the other is proud to not be "modded"

If it came on the car when you purchased it it's not a mod.

If you added it or changed what originally came from the factory it's a mod.

Well when I first saw my car for the very first time it had tint and a spoiler, so it isn't a mod?

This is hilarious -

OK, so a cd changer or/and the BMW factory alarm which the dealer installs are mods, not options ?

What is the difference from BMW CD changer and an aftermarket one? Same goes for the alarm. Would you not consider the addition of a Pioneer stereo system a mod? It's different from the original factory car yes they are mods.

You have trouble grasping the difference between factory options and factory accessories.

Factory accessories = Mods.

However, the reason you don't want to consider factory ACCESSORIES in the same league as other mods like ACS and Hartge is because you feel they are ricer.

Am I correct?

I agree that thre is no right answer, but I am not sure that your baseline is high enough, since any option you add, even if factory installed, which was not on the original base car as it would appear in the brochure, would be captured.

Otherwise, I see the difference as between who installs it as irrelevant, but would draw the line at what is the intent: if it is a BMW accessory that the car was desinged to have (at the option of the buyer) and the installation is not contrary to applicable law, then it is not a mod.

But I probably have my baseline too high -

As well, its all good unless you drop a Hyunday engine in it.

I think that anything that is an OEM option or accessory isn't modding.

I define modding as the stuff people do when they make lots of modifications to their car using aftermarket parts supposedly to improve and personalize and in almost every case end up with something objectively worse than stock.

By the way that doesn't necessarily mean that OEM options and accessories are all tasteful (alu pedal kit anyone)
