What did you learn about your beast today?

So I've only owned her for about 2 months and driven her mostly off hours and weekends. I haven't had the chance to turn on the M mode much, and thought I had in the past, but today when I went to check settings, M mode was basically set to normal across the boards as I had done this early on but forgotten.

What I discovered was a "sport" and a "sport plus" mode on top of a "servotronic" on/off option as well.

For the experts out there, what's the difference and what does the servo option get you?

Sport and sport plus correlate to how quick your throttle response will be. I run mine in M mode with sport plus once it's warm almost all the time because I love the crisp throttle response. It also makes shifting quickly easier because the quick throttle response allows you to pick the speed back up very quickly once done shifting if the car is a 6mt. Servotronic helps with steering but I never mess with that. I leave it on. But for more info, yknow, do a few forum searches.

Totally agree with srmast1. Have had my rig for nearly 2.5 years and a second and third gear pull to 8600 (tune) in Sport + still gets my heart racing to this day. The ability to jump back and forth to different modes via the M-sport button is one of my favorite features of this car.

Down the road, try a stage one tune. BPM offers one with a Sport++ throttle setting and the throttle response with the tune is so direct that it feels like a purely mechanical linkage. Extremely satisfying and great for nailing downshift RPMs.

I learned about that nifty little red line that comes out when a cruise control speed is set. Sometimes it's the little touches that bring out a goofy smile.

I learned that if you've been running the car a bit hard, and when you shut off the car soonest (I pulled into my garage after driving it somewhat hard, but no redline), the fan turn on even though the oil temp is normal.

I've never had this happen to a car during the night at 80F. I opened the hood just to let some of the hot air out.

Well, digging around the back a few minutes ago, I found a stashbox!

The circular button opens it.

Pretty sure that's your in car ski rack, part of the cold weather package? The plastic flap folds down revealing the portal to the trunk. Once wrapped and tied (into a tarp or something?) One end of your skis go in there while the other end rests on the plastic folded down over the rear seat. That's how the salesman explained it anyway. Kinda crazy if you ask me. I wouldn't drive my m3 up to Tahoe to ski, let alone have skis INSIDE the car (i'd drive my fwd beater). The positioning of the setup makes me feel like if I was going fast downhill and had to break abruptly, those skis might turn into a missile. Idk.

One way or the other, it's nice to be able to access trunk contents from inside the car in a pinch. I think it's pretty neat, whatever it is.

I usually throw a fishing pole in there if I know I will have a few minutes on a job and there is going to be water close by. I think marketing as a ski bag probably made the most sense to the engineers and marketing team but as you say, probably very limited to the amount of owners who use it for skis.

Yknow it just occurred to me..I have a moonroof and that could make an external ski rack problematic so that's one option for the moonroof people like me. But yeah, I've never used the ski bag, and the fishing pole idea is a good one - never thought of that. (I don't fish).

I don't know about the plastic part folding down (like how the rear "armrest" folds down) because the whole thing comes out instead, like a cassette. But yeah, it's neat either way.

servotronic provides boost to the hydraulic steering. It's on by default. If you set it to 'sport' the boost is reduced giving you a harder steering which is what you want when driving at high speeds on a track.

You can put ice on the powerdome as well .

MOST cars with electric fans do it in hot weather, the engine stops circulating water when you shut it off, so the temp goes up.

Not today but I recently learned (with 6mt), that up to 3 seconds after hitting the start button, pressing the clutch will start it up..

I've had my car for almost 4 years and learned today that the steering column is telescoping, lol.

Only reason I stumbled onto this is because the dealer screwed with all my seating adjustments, which is one of my absolute pet leaves! I have manual seats and try never to valet my car because of this.

I learned last night that the E9x is also a part time weather person.

I took her out for a drive last night. It was in the 30's as there's a polar vortex upon us in the mid-atlantic. Then I hear a "ding" sound and see a snowflake on my dash. Ding sounds usually are never good. The last time I took her out and I heard a ding sound it was b/c one tire was low in pressure and then I found a nail in the tire.

When I glance over at the nav system, it says to be careful since it's 37F outside although my car's dash said 30F. She cares about me!
