Are US Dealers using 0W-30 or 5W30 on LCI M5s?
I read that UK dealers have switched to 0W-30 for the M5. They were using 5W-30 previously.
Does anyone know if the US dealers have done the same or are we still getting the unwanted 5W-30 oil like we did on the 2013 cars? I'm doing break-in service later this week, so I need to know whether to buy 9 bottles of 0W-30.

One other thing. I'm pretty sure my car is currently running 0w-30 from factory based on short engine warm up times.

Is a quicker warm-up be beneficial? I'll admit it's bit of a pain to wait several miles for the engine to come up to temperature, especially when a Corvette pulls up next to you at a light and you have to go easy. However it seems to me that the oil must be very effective if the engine takes a while to warm up. Is this analysis too simplistic? Mine is 5-30.

Further the GC0W-30 provides better protection at all temperatures because it is has better lubricants than BMW5W-30

BMW of Dallas used 5W-30 for my LCI breakin service about 2 months ago. Takes forever to warm up now but it gets hotter than sin down here more often than it's cold! I may request 0w-30 for my mid cycle 5k oil change coming up in a month or so.

5w30 is what my dealer uses and what I think BMW sets as the minimum standard for the M5. I deliver a case of 0w30 for them to use instead. I think it's a better option overall.

Shoot, for the reasons some mention above 1. (hot weather) AND 2. It is listed as an acceptable oil viscosity by BMW 3. Is the brand I happily and successfully run in my four other cars, boat, and Harley 4. I plan on doing interim changes-not necessitated by the BMW service schedule...it is Mobil 1 0W-40 European Formula for all but the first 5-600 miles of my M5's life...FWIW...

I find the 0w-30 quite slow to warm up; can be up to 1/2 hour of sedate driving for me. Could be due to lower average ambient temps in UK? I hate to think how slow it would be with 5w-30!

I usually drive around 60mph, with the odd 2-3 sec WOT over several hours and mine stays around 100 deg C mark once warm. Does that sound normal, or am I just driving it too gently? Last edited by Dionysus; 12-31-2013 at 10:49 AM.. |
