A major attraction of the M140 was the excellent B58 engine. It have the car immense character and of course power, an engine I'm familiar with in my own 540.

To remove the engine, lower the power and change it to FWD shows a total lack of willingness to remain connected to a loyal fan base.

Some very bad judgements/decisions have been made by bmw and hit always driven by environment/economic/political concerns, they seem content to launch a V8 X5 M50i but have completely ruined the M140.

The new 1 series is aimed at a very different market to before, the only thing that matters is sales volume now.

I think that it'll be hard for the new SUB...1 series to make the same selling and production numbers of the E8x/F2x series.

I'm saying this beacuse it offers nothing, and repeat, NOTHING more that what you can find out on a Ford, Kia, Skoda.... with significant less money.

Here in Italy the new FWD 120 diesel M sport x drive costs 45k euros....as an M140i F21! I'm totally shocked.....BMW is going out crazy if they think the could sell a piece of shit at the price of a true 6 cyl. driver's car. Also...at that price, here in Italy you can buy also the Audi S3....they're crazy.....nothing more than totally mad.

This belongs in the thread of what cars do you see on the road and instantly judge.

Not something I would buy. Perhaps they are trying to steal Prius customers with the design, because these are the consumers I see driving this.

Most probably. VW has had exclusive rights to the latest Haldex version for a few generations. Not sure how long that lasts. Haldex v7 puts "more than 10%" of available torque rearward and can transfer 60% to the back under slip and 100% to the front.

V6 was a mechanical version of v7, instead of electronic. V5 is the latest available to non VW Group buyers and is 0% to the rear until slip when it can move up to 50% to the rear.

Ford developed a setup similar to Haldex v7 but a little more aggressive and I believe it had a front LSD in the Focus RS. They still use a version in the small SUVs. Not sure why BMW doesn't develop a similar setup instead of buying off the shelf Haldex setups.

Why not?

I would take this over a similarly priced MINI.

I'd say give it a chance and see what it's like in the flesh. I took a serious look at the Euro M135i while I was shopping for my M235i Convertible and really, the 1 Series is a good all-rounder and DD. 4 people can sit comfortably inside and with the rear seats down, it can carry a respectable load. And you can get a powerful engine and MSport model if you want that as well. The upside of the consistent interior design is that the environment isn't very different to the much bigger models.

I recently had a new 118d xDrive MSport as a hire car (thanks, Hertz Geneva!) and I was very impressed with it as an AWD cruiser and carrier: I'd rather have it than an X1/2/3. Yes, the Euro 1 Series handling isn't quite on a par with the 2 Series coupé but that may not be a factor if you do mostly urban/freeway driving.

For anyone new to the design, the 1 Series can look oddly foreshortened compared to the other Series. But once you start to see them in numbers on the road, they actually end up making the 3/5 Series look overly long for the interior space i.e. in the 3/5 you don't get that much extra internal space for the relatively longer external length (other than in the Touring).

So if you're shopping for a 2 Series then I think it's worth at least giving the new 1 Series a look too. In fact, I'd say that applies if you're looking at a 3 Series sedan as well.

The one you drove is rear-biased xDrive on RWD platform.

Very different from the Haldex drive (FWD base) this new generation offers.

BMW is good at maintaining the overall dynamic regardless of the platform but it will take some getting used to. A 1M version, if they were to offer one (there's currently no plan to), would compete with the A45 AMG.

I don't like FWD garbage and it's damaging to BMWs brand. However, I've driven the X1 Xdrive and it's a really good system, I couldn't tell it was fast wheel drive at all.

So I have to give it to bmw, they BMW'd FWD atleast as far as X-drive is concerned

Most likely as pretty well all transverse engine mount AWD vehicles are not full time AWD. It's actually not a bad thing as it reduces fuel economy and the latest differentials can transfer power to the rear wheels very quickly as I owned a Golf R and could not find any determinable difference between that and my old STI when it came to daily driving or slippery conditions. On a track is where you can see some FWD tendencies but really how many people are going to be tracking these cars as 99.9% will be used for commuting.

What a poor design decision. Audi can make FWD cars without that line.
