Turbo Swap DIY?

Does anyone have any experience doing a turbo swap (oem, or, oem style upgraded)?

If so can you please post information as far as necessary tools, and, where you found the resources showing how to do this?

I've searched this forum and only appear to have found out how long it would take a shop to do it.

Thanks everyone

I hope you are not serious here? You really need a bare minimum a Bentley Service manual. This is not an easy job.

Volkswackin, sounds like you've done this before on the 335? If so, how long did it take you and did you use a lift?

This is no light task...I can do both turbos on an N54 in about a half a day (on a lift). First time took a whole day though.

Quick list of tools off the top of my head...
T50 torx---Manifold Nuts
11mm deep socket---Manifold nuts
E8 external torx---Heat shields
T30 torx---Oil and Coolant lines
8mm---splash shields
E10 torx---Steering shaft
16mm---aluminum thrust plate
18mm---Subfame
E14---motor mount
E12---water pump
10mm---thermostat
13mm---v-clamps on cat
12mm---exhast collector

This is just off the top off my head. Dont forget the wastegates need to be adjusted, so you will need a vacuum pump.

Again, I want to stress that this is not a light job. And not a job I would not want to do without a lift. The front turbo can actually come out the top, but the rear turbo has to come out the bottom.

yep done this a few times...first time took forever because the coolant and oil lines just straight up SUCK to get out. Only way id do it is on a lift though like anything it could be done with just jackstands and a jack...to correct BMWJT the wastegates dont require adjustment if your installing new stock turbos..though i suppose if your putting in used ones or upgraded youd need to adjust? But yea..not a fun job and certainly not something id suggest for someone who is new to BMWs..also make sure to not mix up what E torx and torx goes where because some are longer than others...

Thanks a lot guys!
I don't have access to a lift. I'm thinking that the possibility of something going wrong is too great for me to take this risk. I'm going to talk this over with my friend who is much more mechanically inclined than I am. Most likely it won't be a go for us - bummed, but at the end of the install, I want the job done right. Thanks again!

I want to know if anyone will ever put up a proper picture DIY for turbo replacement. I just want to see how it's done for my own education.
