Engines are not really "Broken in" at the factory
Came across this interesting article from PCA (Porsche Club of America).
Quote:
Sounds like engines are not truly broken in from the factory. I plan on following BMWs break in advice for their M cars. Keep it under 4k RPM for the first 1,000 miles then slowly bring it up. After it hits 1200 Miles I am going to follow Mike Miller's advice (this is an older version of the old school maintenance schedule, there is a much newer version). and change the engine oil, trans oil, and diff oil. I am leasing the car but I'm planning to buy it out after. I'd prefer to spend $200 for the fluids and I will DIY. |

Breaking an engine in at the factory would be ideal, but you're then talking of dozens of hours per engine for that process - really unfeasible for a mass production car. Cool article.

I guess Porsche likes to do things a little differently, hahaha.

No problem, I hope people share more stuff like this! You can drive it like you stole it, you just never know what may pop up down the road (no pun intended) |

Great article. Thanks for posting.
And yes, I followed the break-in procedure and did a 1200 mile oil change. |

Yep...I did gentle roll-on's to 4k or so for the first 1000, then changed all my fluid and continued doing roll-on's to 5k or so up till 2000.
I also have slowly taken it to 6k in a higher gear and allowed the back pressure to slow the car back down to normal operation several times...something I have always done to my new engines. |
