your eyes.

On the M1 today with waze and tomtom speed camera alerts on and all good. I noticed a silver 5 series in the middle lane sitting at 68mph overtaking a lorry. Instant alarm bells go off as A it's a 5 series and B it's driving very sensibly.

Quick scan to count the rear view mirrors andlow and behold I can see two one for the driver and one for the passenger.
I crawl passed at 70mph and see the policeman, we exchange knowing looks and he pulls back into the inside lane.

Just as I turned off a woman in a a4 came tanking past so I would assume said silver 5 series would soon be catching up.

It’s a useful skill being my able to spot unmarked cars on the roads, some forces are easier to spot than others - extra aerial, wing mirror, LEDs stuck on the bumpers/mirrors. Saw a Staffordshire car with a anpr camera fitted in the bumper of a silver f30 330d xdrive, not the most descreet
Bmw have a police spec - authorities on the v5/reg check apps

It's not that much of a surprise to see a 5 series being driven sensibly, is it?

You can buy a device that will alert you to unmarked Police cars as they all have Police radios onboard

It is a bit much but I bet you can get some discount, I spent £500 on a laser jammer back in 2004 when I had a CSL and typically never went through a speed trap in the 18 months I had the car.

I think I would rather just drive under the limit and when I want a blast head into the hills.

Dog guards are always a sign too, and as you said, a BMW or Audi driving sensibly? Either a well behaved drug dealer or TouringPleb coming to nick you!

No BMWs for me. I'm only allowed to look at them in the car park.

It's 12hrs of Astras, Vivaro or the mighty L200 for me!

.....So long as the vehicle is transmitting and also used by the other emergency services.

If you rely on it, you will either be overly cautious because of spurious alerts or you will still get caught if certain cars are on an Emcon secure state and therefore not transmitting. Even for £500 it sort of defeats the object. If you are driving at speeds all the time where it 'saves you money', you may wish to think about your driving style.

Do as JLR suggests or as 225 recommends in the opening post

Realistically, the days of warp-speed on motorways are long gone. Between gantry cameras and specs, you just can't be sure enough.

Save it for the dual carriageway you know, late enough for the traffic to be low, when you're on your own.

Saw a grey Seat Leon unmarked on the m1 by junction 12 today, very discreet and un-assuming!

They're not always driving what we expect

Yep or just cruise control! I don’t speed during daylight, or if a car’s behind me, just not worth the risk these days with the bastards hiding in tractors etc.

Staffordshire police also have black 5 door audi s3 (debased) with an anpr camera on the rear bumper... That is quite discreet though in all honesty

Well I guess you could google check them on mobile, iPad while driving if unsure about the car in front / behind you....
