Annual Low Mileage Service

My car is scheduled to have its first annual low mileage service performed next week. Should I ask about software/firmware updates? Everything is working and the car runs great but I would be interested in any upgrades to the NAV system. Thanks.

The 2011 CIC map sets for the hard drive based idrive/Nax systems (all E89's) are not out yet. When it does release the upload is not free - unless you can sweet talk them. As far as the DME/ECU software is concerned they will probalby load any updates to that as SOP, whether you request it or not, I guess you can ask. That upload should be free.

You will probably be due for a software update that allows your computer data to be read by non-BMW code readers. Understand this is a legal issue in US.

Hey rmorin49, how many miles do you have on your car? Did the on board computer inform you to perform the service?

I have 10,000 miles on mine since I got it, 9 months ago. The on board computer hasn't informed me to do anything yet. But I called up the dealership to see if there were any software upgrades and apparently there is one for DCT. So I will be bringing the Z in for that.

I find that the dealer TA normally advises me if there is a software update or not. It was like this on my e85 and the same on my e89.

I would leave well enough alone

Good luck.

What's the deal with this low mileage service? I got 6K on ours and it's been in on the road for about 9 months now.

Oil & Filter change requirement for BMW maintenance is whichever comes first - 1 yr, 15,000 miles, or shorter mileage if the car is always driven on short trips (the computer trips it at a shorter mileage).

I received "service notice" from dealer after one year. Told that car was elegible for "low mileage service," 6,500 miles on odometer at the time.

I just had my anual low milage service two weeks ago and they automatically did two software updates. When I booked the service they checked my car's details in the system and told me over the phone durring the booking process they would be applied. I think when they give you the paperwork when you get there it would also be listed on that so if you don't see it then ask them about it.

The first main service is at 15k miles but if the car is 12 months old and has less miles they want to change the oil and filter. I had 7.5k on mine so they did that but didn't reset the service counter do it will still be due the full service in another 7.5k miles.

I only have 4K miles on my car but it is eligible and due for service after it has been in service for 12 months. Service is really not much more than an oil change, I think they call it Inspection I.

Thanks, so I guess in your case, even though you only have 4k miles, its 12 months, so the on board computer informed you to do a service. Yea the key is 'eligible' I am starting to find this BMW free* schedule maintenance a scam.... My first eligible service is not for another 3 months (until I reach one year since I got my car) or another 5000 miles (until I reach 15,000 miles). Basically its like once a year...

How exactly is that a "scam'? What were your expectations?

Negative. The "computer" has said nothing. I simply called my dealer told them I had the car for 12 months and I wanted to have the annual service performed. They made an appointment and it goes in on 2/21.

My first service included everything Rolfs has plus wipers, And a typical inspection of shocks, breaks, suspension components, underbody check and roof mechanism and lubrication of seals and a full in/out cleaning service.

For instance, a month ago, the oil warning light came on so I went to a dealer. They wouldn't even top it off for me for free, so I had to buy a quart of oil. I asked if i could get my oil change then, its 10,000 miles at that time, and was refused, because its not scheduled for an oil change.
