I got excited there for a second until I saw the FWD platform. I knew the position of the front wheel relative to the windshield somehow didn't look right.
If BMW had a RWD platform, they could easily compete against the A3 and CLA on driving dynamics alone. Now that I see it's a FWD platform, that advantage is negated. BMW keeps going down the wrong money-saving path. |

Or instead to an A3/S3/RS3, CLA/CLA45 with "cheap FWD", the latter of which with enough power to blow the doors right off many RWD vehicles? Or maybe instead a Focus RS, Golf R based on lesser models with "cheap FWD"? Or maybe a WRX or WRX STi? Those at least have a longitudinal motor, right? But wait, the Impreza from which they borrow is still available in some countries with - you guessed it - FWD. Or, they can stay in a G42/G43 coupe/convertible 2/M2, still have RWD, still have the option of AWD in the non M-models, still have the option for an I6 in both M and M Performance models, and still have as much as 400hp+ under the hood. Which do you think will happen? |

I don't know lads, I'm a little concerned with the proportions of this thing. reminds me well too much of that Chinese-market-only abomination they released last year. I sure hope they just stretch the existing 2er, but this feels like a whole new animal.

On the other hand, if they have other reasons for choosing the vehicle that don't align with the "cheap FWD" that has befallen other models with the same nameplate, well, they can move on to whichever models from whichever other makes will help them feel good about their purchase. |

Good guess, since it's stated in the OP that it will use a B48.

First of all, it doesn't confirm anything, since its just a picture of an early test mule that could mislead, plus we have inside information that already had confirmed that the 2 Series GC is based on UKL (will be FWD/AWD). Secondly, the 2 Series will span two separate platforms, as I said in an earlier post. So, in fact, the 2 Series will comprise vehicles that are FWD, front-biased AWD, RWD, and rear-biased AWD. It depends on the vehicle in question. Quote:
The current M2 will be in production until 2021. The following generation 2 Series and M2 coupe (and convertible) will be RWD and be in production until approximately 2028. So, yes you just barely got in under the wire with only ten years to spare. That said, a FWD platform can be the basis of very high performing cars. You may be aware of the current TT RS and how quick it is. BMW won't be building 1 or 2 Series UKL vehicles with that much power and as capable a chassis any time soon, but if they do someday, you can bet they will outperform the current generation RWD vehicles. No, they won't have the same RWD appeal, but they are not doomed to perform poorly just because of the donor UKL platform (or whatever succeeds UKL). |
