M2 Gran Coupe rumor

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Rumor has it that BMW is going to release M2 Gran Coupe with the spec 420-ish hp, 4 door, stick and AWD. Wouldn't this be a slap in the face of the M3 (420-ish hp, 4 door, stick, RWD)?

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/n...-junior-m-line

Quote:
Autocar also understands the M2 will eventually be joined by a four-door namesake, despite previous reports to the contrary. Rivalling the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 and forthcoming new Audi RS3 Saloon, the M2 Gran Coupé will get around 400bhp from a highly tuned version of the M235i Gran Coupé’s four-cylinder engine and have fully variable four-wheel drive.

That rumor is complete bullshit.

But, even if an F44-based M2 Gran Coupe were coming, it would be a completely different product from an M3. Go drive an RS3 and RS5 Sportback to understand why.

In regards to an M2 Gran Coupe based on the F44?
If I pick up my phone I can still hear someone from BMW M. Laughing.

Since we are keeping the discussion open, I would like to provide another reminder for everyone.

https://www.thedrive.com/sheetmetal/...coming-in-2019

We called that out here at Bimmerpost for the BS it was at the time, but the rumor spread for months and would not die. In fact, you can find people across the internet today that still believe the above will happen.

Autocar updated their article as the evidence that BMW was *not* going to build a sub 3 Series four door RWD car became more damning, but they still insisted an M2 Gran coupe was coming, complete with an S55:

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/n...onights-reveal

Quote:
The highlight of the new line-up, though, will be the M2 Gran Coupé.

This model will use the same 365bhp turbocharged 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine as its highly lauded two-door sibling. It will be offered with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Although it's still early days, that engine – designated S55B30 - is expected to provide the M2 Gran Coupé with similar performance to the M2, which has an official 0-62mph time of 4.4sec in manual form and an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

Hypothetically,I expect either updated M135iS or M235iS rather than an M.
An M contradicts many recent and past statements.

The M2 is the real replacement for the M3 coupe. BMW keeps growing its cars so the M2 is now the size of what used to be an M3 and it is a much better size than the M3.

As an old E46 M3 owner, I have to totally agree.

It physically can't work. The UKL2 architecture can't accept a 6 cylinder engine, it is transverse only. It also can't accept being RWD. It is a FWD chassis. This rumour is utter crap.
