Just wanted to be sure that this is what I was hearing. This is my first turbocharged vehicle, and FWIW I think I've been in a total of two other turbo vehicles in my life.

Because it's an intoxicating sound! It's part of the fun of owning a turbo charged car.

hopefully downpipes will make them a little louder, i personally love the sound of turbo's spooling. On the b5 s4 they sound awsome.

It is sad, I agree. Thankfully, that's not the sound I'm talking about. These systems are a closed loop and should stay that way. There's no reason to run a BOV unless you're trying to announce to the world that you drive a turbo charged car. If you're looking for faster boost recovery, get an upgraded DV (diverter valve) which will replace the plastic stock part that has been notorious for leaking on VW/Audi applications for years.

It's the whistle of a spooling turbo that's music to my ears. Although, the sound of an air-cooled 911 is right up there.

I've owned turbo cars in the past including including a Mitsubishi Eclipse GST. In comparison to cars like that (typical turbo charged engine) the 335 is silent. However, you can likely descern some turbo sound, but like the lag, you have to look for it. It is not obvious and someone who did not know what to look/listen for woudl never know. The throaty exhauset is orders of magnitude more prevalent. When I first drove the car i heard the turbos "screaming"... then I realized that was me.

I know exactly what you're talking about. I had a WRX with 3' pipes all the way from the turbo and also an STI, when you're stepping on the throttle the sound of a spooling turbo is music to my ears!!!BTW, I've never installed a BOV on a car, I would actually put a little plate in between the BOV and the intercooler to keep the pressure built up, kind of a home made anti-lag system :rocks:
Even though there aren't many signs of a turbo on the 335, when you've driven turbo cars long enough you can tell they're there.

the reason you dont really hear the turbos is because bmw specificly designed the intake to shut the sound out. When my car came in, we pulled it into the shop and removed the airbox cover....uhhh yeah they scream and whistle and even have that blow-off sound from the wastegate return, but since all the emissions from the wastegate and turbo go back into the intake box, the second you put the cover on it, its dead silent.

It is funny that there is no agreement. I wonder if the difference is E90s vs E92s. Or just folks not knowing what it is they are hearing/listening for, or perhaps the usual fanboy auto-response.

I could hear the turbos in the 335 sedan clearly but very faint and only while sitting still, gently revving the motor windows up. Once underway, I could pick it up once in awhile if on good asphalt otherwise, no.

So they are audible if you're really listening, otherwise I'd say no. I did see some Riced up 335i on youtube with a loud blow off valve that is sure to impress all the teenage boys out there. Couldn't really hear the turbos spool but you can hear the air venting.

i can't pick up the sound. true to form though, i'm not familiar with blown engines, as all i've owned are bmw's bread and butter: high rev-ing naturally aspirated engines. i can admit my ear is untrained. but i don't detect even a faint hiss, whoosh or whistle.

I'm kinda glad this thread was revived. Ironically it crossed my mind the other day (yea, pretty sad when I got nothing to think about but an old thread on E90Post.com). I stand by my original comment on page 1 of this thread, about hearing a distinct sound when I gunned it that one time.

But I retract the simple "yes" answer - since then I've actually seen other cars with after-market turbos and heard them whistling etc. and I have to say it's one of the most annoying sounds I've ever heard. IMHO it isn't befitting of such a prestigious car as a BMW to be making that sound - not to come off as conceited about the whole name brand thing, but in my mind a BMW is classy, even if it is a sport sedan/coupe, it's just CLASSY!

Now if someone wanted to hear them, add a BOV, etc. that's their business but as is the 335i's turbos are awesome to me. I like the sound of the engine, the stock exhaust is nice when I push it, and most of all I love the stealth factor. No one really expects me to move so fast in this car

My revised $0.02, guess that adds up to $0.04 now

Whining is quite bothersome I agree, but you can't argue with the utter beauty of that God awful sucking sound turbos make when spun up. There are some insane clips of a Porsche Turbo on their website doing a standing start and the turbos just howl like a tornado. It's utterly beautiful.
