Customs quarantine fee? WTF?
So as some of you know I recently ordered an ecotune dpf delete kit valued at $1500 aud, I just got an email from FedEx this morning.
"To release the shipment for delivery, Australian Customs charges and/or Australian Quarantine fees of $211.15 must be paid. To pay your Customs and/or Quarantine charges, please call FedEx on 1800 111 112. Select option 1 and a customs support representative will be pleased to assist you with payment processing and the release of your shipment." What the actual shit? Is this legit? I honestly want to ask them back to send it over and shove their bullshit fee up their ass. They asked me earlier to supply and invoice of my purchase of the kit, and a description of it. I think perhaps the fact it was a $1500 BMW part they think they have the right to charge me for testing a metal pipe for cocaine, they obviously need to fucken test themselves! Is there anything I can do? Any advice would be well appreciated.

That's standard for items declared at over AU$1000. 5% customs duty and 10% GST. Sounds like your item was declared at around AU$1400?
Edit: I just saw that it's around $1500 worth. This charge is correct. |

Yep, anything over $1000AUD, otherwise people would just import cheap stuff and sell it here and make money lol

I'd recommend that you have the seller amend the invoice without VAT and refund you the difference then provide the new invoice to FedEx for the amended customs fees then pay those customs fees. |

I think asking the seller to amend the invoice below $1000 AUD will help.
However, will the custom argue that the part's value should be more than that when they open it? will they compare any market value of the product? will it be better to ask the seller to claim that it is a used product? VAT also shouldn't be included, that's why I bought my sport equipment/clothing from England. |

Thanks for all the responses, now I know how to better handle imports. I just checked my invoice and apparently I wasn't charged VAT, swore I saw it on the checkout though, I guess I'll go ahead and pay FedEx. Cheers guys!

I ordered a custom made rear bar for my 4x4 from the USA once, was like 400 bucks to get it here on a pallet on a boat, got stung like $900 more just to get it out and past all that garbage, shocking.
