seems like the added cost and potential for something to go wrong would offset the ~3% consumption savings.

I agree! That special battery mentioned in the article won't come cheap...

Everything counts in large amounts (Depeche Mode 1985)

Combined with other innovations such as DI, etc., the overall savings in fuel economy and emissions will make a difference and put BMW on its way towards pro-environment policies while not diluting the driving experience (Prius anyone).

The re-generative braking is also combined with a new generationbattery that uses glas and ceramis to store energy

While I don't doubt the article, it's hard to take the place seriously:

Breaking?

I hope not.

Jalopnick is a site I follow religiously, and while they are tongue-in-cheek (not a bad thing) they are also very well informed. Autoblog mootches info off their site.

Jalponik is part of the gawkner network ... they're on the up and up.

Glad reg braking is finding it's way into production cars. Just hope they can drive the weight of the system down. Now if they'd only look at using the heat of the exhaust to get some electricity too ... I'm all about more power through effeciency.

Ultimately cool system would reg the heat from the brakes, exhaust and engine cooling system.

idk about this. what if you want to upgrade brakes? then this feature is pointless? correct?

The number of BMW owners who go with aftermarket brakes is probably a fraction of one percent. Doesnt really effect many people...
