The new CLA looks nice in my opinion.

With that being said, I recently had one for a whole day. It has some major pitfalls: creaking interior plastics, driver's side wind noise due to poor insulation, and fixed headrests.

The boring driving dynamics are fine, but those other things are deal breakers.
Don't forget the horrid transmission and stupid Double iPad screens.

Merc's interiors look flashy at first due to those screens but I think it's lazy design. There's too much emphasis on tech in the cabin. I like how Bentley and Bugatti have chosen to minimize the amount of visible tech in their interiors and focus more on design and craftsmanship. BMW and Audi interiors offer a nice balance.

At least this BMW model has a "normal" grille.

One thing I loved seeing in the configurator is "Remote Start". It's about time all BMWs get this option!

They should have just built Paul's 4 dor RWD model. Yeah legrom, yada yada...but it's still a RWD performance car like the 2 coupe, which everyone loves, with 4 doors.

Back into my E36 hole...

I know I'm gonna catch it for saying this but I'd rather have the 2020 JCW clubman.

I like the Clubman for different reasons. But as a former MINI fan an early adopter of the brand (Going all the way back to 2002), I find current F56 based MINIs to be overpriced and quite frankly long on the proverbial tooth.

In that segment, my money is on this new 2er, FWD and all.

You make too many arrogant assumptions. Really getting tired of the reverse snobbery coming from a select few in this site.

FWD BMW is not inherently a bad thing, some cheap option (by German or especially BMW standard)

Guess if I was to shop this I would compare a full loaded M235i to say light loaded 330i?

Minis have always been over priced for what you get but the 2020 clubman and countryman JCWs really have to get you thinking twice. I'm sure the clubman will be smaller than this but when it comes to price and performance they're bang on identical. The question really becomes something to the effect of "do I want the cheapest model of the more expensive brand or the most expensive model of the cheeper brand?"

Disclaimer: Admittedly I am a little bias as I am a cpo clubman S owner.

I also have a first gen R55 Clubman S. I was also one of the very first in the US to take delivery of a new Clubman S back in early 2008. My current Clubman S is the second R55 (LCI Model)and last new MINI I bought back in '13.

I hate this car. The 2 Series coupe and convertible are good. BMW purposely makes this look bad so as to not eat the lunch of the 3 and 4 series. The Mercedes CLA is no different (Audi A3 is ok). Why can't they just make smaller versions of the bread and butter cars and let size of the vehicle dictate who buys it? Instead they make them worse. I don't get it.

You don't get it and here is why:

The original overseas RWD 1-Series was expensive to manufacture and the interior packaging was not ideal because it was RWD. Most buyers in that segment are not terribly concerned as to where the drive wheels are. Their priorities are interior layout, price, etc.

Enter this car, Mercedes A220, Audi A3. All of these are FWD entry level models. This is what this segment wants.

If you so desire a compact RWD new BMW, your local dealer will be happy to put you behind the wheel of a 230i, 240i or M2.

I was commenting entirely on aesthetics. I think they look bad. Headlights, nose, and shape are wrong

I can't even look at it without seeing it, really hoping this isn't the beginning of brand dilution over the next 5 to 10 years.

Just want to know why it had to look like this? Sure make it FWD, but why does it have to look so bland and generic!?
