Had to "settle" for a Porsche loaner today

My GLC300 was in for some time consuming service today, so I requested a loaner vehicle. The SM apologized because he didn't have an MB loaner available, but asked if I'd accept a Porsche. I was like, "Um...sure. I can cope with that." I was hoping for a coupe, but got a Macan. Still a pretty nice vehicle to tool around in for a few hours. There was an E400 there with the new MB sunroof that is totally exposed when open. It also has the full window area open when both front and rear windows are down. And the matte paint job. I'm just surprised that sunroof isn't vulnerable to damage at high speeds with it being exposed like this.

Isn't that just a regular sunroof?
Like an Audi A5, or a Hyundai?

I mean - I wouldn't complain either but that is a sad looking Macan. What is the black trim? Is that plastic? I guess I've just never seen a base model like that before

Maybe so. But don't most sunroofs go into a space between the hard top and the headliner? IOW, the glass isn't exposed like that? I never open the sunroof on my GLC300, so maybe I'm auf dem Holzweg. It just looks odd to me.

Most do. But it depends on the car. Coupes with a sloped roof don't usually have it that way. Like Veloster and A5 off the top

They only had two others at the dealer and those were both Turbo models. Big bucks. But yeah, it's pretty subdued for a Porsche. And it had over 50k miles on it. This dealership used to sell loaners when they hit 20k. But they're having trouble getting cars to use as loaners.

That’s wild! We sell our Cadillac loaners at 3-4k miles. There’s a lot of money to be made selling loaners, we cut our fleet from 60 down to 15 bc we can’t get replacements. 15 was the manufacturer minimum we could have on the road

Yeah - I totally get it. I guess it's good that you got a loaner given the circumstances.

Yeah, I was glad they had a loaner. The service and other work they had to do took 5 hours. Would have been a long wait sitting in the dealership.

What did you think of the PDK transmission in the Macan?

It's butter smooth. Though the 4 cyl is meh.

I didn't mess with the paddles, but the transmission itself was pretty seamless. Although I had the impression that it was always in too high a gear, so the engine felt like it was lugging a bit. Like the RPMs were too low. But maybe that's just from being in a different car.

Yeah, it was no speed demon, but it reacted quickly to throttle input. Unlike my GLC, which will often ask if I really, really want to go faster.

My car's sunroof mechanism is just like that Merc's. I'd have preferred the more traditional mechanism where the glass folds into the roof. But that's what happens when the rear cabin has a glass roof as well.

Base Macan's engine doesn't inspire much confidence, but it's a well handling car.
