From 335d to 330d

I'm debating 'down grading'
A new car is on the horizon and likely to get another 3 series but have my concerns.....
Currently have a 335d so the obvious thing was to look at the new 335d (although maybe a saloon) BUT I'm not sure I can handle X Drive.

Had an A5 Quattro previously and although the 4 wheel made the handling brilliant, it was boarder line boring as a result!

So, I've test drove a 330d and I really liked it BUT, I'd always be thinking 'what would the 335d have been like'.

Has anyone else had this dilemma?
I'm interested to hear what you decided and how you decided!

Which 330d - the new model or an E92 LCI ... or pre LCI ?

I am guessing you mean a new 330d - in which case it is hardly a downgrade from an older 335d ... on paper to 60 at least it will be quicker and far better on fuel.

I went for a 330d LCI over a 335d as it felt quicker - even though it wasn't above 60. I found it more involving.

I personally think the new 330d is the best car you can buy right now. It has awesome performance yet still returns really good economy.

I was going to replace my pre LCI E90 320d M sport with a LCI E92 330d m sport but since the new car is so good I think I'll be waiting a year and get an F30

I think a move from an LCI 335d to a new 330d is a positive move - quicker and more economical

I've not driven the new 330d but certainly on paper it looks like an upgrade over an e9x 335d.
Silly as it sounds, I'd miss the 335d exhausts on either side!

Might be completely wrong, but isn't xdrive optional?

Unfortunately it's X Drive only on the 335d......
I say unfortunately as in not a choice, not to slate the X Drive, I'm sure there's plenty in positives but just not for me 😎

I'm with you 100% there, I don't understand why they dropped them - maybe because every car in the road seems to have them nowadays and they wanted to be different??
Whatever the reason, I wish they hadn't got rid

Yes there's something really appealing about those 'balanced' exhausts. I even prefer them to the 'M' quads.

I actually liked the exhausts on one side only like my 330d LCI ... it was far quicker than people realised at 6 to 60 and the twin exhausts shouted 'performance model' to anyone knowing anything about BMW 3 series.

That said I did really like the look of the exhausts on the 335i / 335d ... but liked the relative stealth of my 330d LCI

I prefer manual to the auto in the 335D so i got my 2010 330D and had it mapped to 310BHP and 620Nm so its quicker than a stock 335D and more of a drivers car in my opinion with the maual box......

I have a 330d pre lci and I prefer this than a 335d as more people seam to get problems with the 335d. My 330d is mapped and it made 475 ibs ft of torque which is enough for most people. Auto box means I don't have to worry about the clutch and flywheel failing. Which they will!

I have recently fitted a Wagner and blanked the egr the car feels more torque'y than before. But I still average about 32mpg urban and 44mpg extra urban. So it's a good compromise I think the 330d

How is a new 330d faster than an old 335d?

I guess only if you don't plan to map

Dual turbos so more power across the range surely keeps the 335d on top.

I know 303 is a bit more than 286 but it's also a damn sight more less than the easily attainable 345+ from a remap on the 335d.

What does the new 330d map to? Anyone done it?

I'm genuinely interested, no agenda or defensive mindedness

But I agree the twin exhausts look better regardless of anything else. pjs on here has an F30 335d and it's a huge upgrade to the E92 335d but, both pipes on the left? Boo...

That's another thing...... my 335d is remapped so both models will feel like a downgrade!
The new 335d is less than I'm used to as well and correct me if I'm wrong, I didn't think anyone had fingered out how to remap the F30/31 yet??
But that's something I'll have to accept..... begrudgingly admittedly!

I think the F30 is quicker because of the new 7 speed sport box, makes sense if you think about it. Gears in the e9X will be taller hence worse acceleration in theory. I've encountered one of these and it did seem pretty swift I have to say.

at 380 BHP and 813NM they are all downgrades to me I'm staying with an E92 335d LCI for sure and I only have 42k miles on it

New 335ds are great on fuel too. Not like E9x models..

The 4wd is meant to be good and not too intrusive - probably more rear bias than an Audi..

Give it a go...

the F30 in any engine guise has one huge drawback compared to the e92, its looks! the F30 335i has the 2 single exhausts so I wonder why the 335d has the twins on one side
