Newsflash - the existence of this car does not impede your ability to get a different car from BMW's (quite expansive) model portfolio. You want something RWD based and less roomy? Great, get yourself a 2-Series coupe, 3-Series, 4-Series, etc. BMW makes plenty of those types of cars, more than anyone else in the market, in fact. But to say "if someone wanted that platform they could buy an Audi"? It makes precisely ZERO BUSINESS SENSE for BMW to just give away thousands of sales per month to the A3, CLA, A-class, etc.
Yes, but BMW doesn't need to go that low and dilute their brand for the sake of sales unless it means we get more of the good ones. SUV sales let us have things like the M2CS, FWD car sales don't give us anything.... yet

I don't agree with catering to the lower end of the spectrum when it means compromising your core brand. BMW could've done RWD and been competitive but they chose not to which is my point

Coming soon! Get ready for the all electric lineup. If I recall, Merc stated to cease future development of combustion engineering... so ya know who is going to follow that! Everyone! The platforms are already starting. It will be a gradual thing with us all sitting around a campfire recalling cassette tapes and such, taking note of not recalling the change.
Sadly, I think our current M's are such beasts is because they see the writing on the wall and know already, the end of an era. I am just glad to have gotten a little bite before it was too late.

Good car, ok maybe. Good BMW, no.

I get why they are doing it, but you aren't going to convince me this is better than RWD based cars.

Fake news.

This is just a prime example of a "journalist" saying positive things because the manufacturer flew them out to test drive their car.

Real impressions will come back in a few months, and will not be from the likes of Jalopnik.

What this car has that the E46 didn't: FWD, no manual, electric steering, Ford Focus-like styling. Sad.

Just doesn't look as premium or polished as an A class, S3, Golf R or even Megane RS. This would be way down the list of choices.

Funnily enough, they have increased the price here for the new FWD-based AWD M135i I4 model, above the outgoing RWD/AWD M140i I6 it replaces.

And there's a new Golf R / S3 just around the corner, and rumors have it near 400hp.

I thought the author's theoretical WRX owner shopping for something with far more refinement was a fairly good one. It's a matter of perspective. Personally I like the idea of lowering the cost of admission for a BMW, especially an M Performance model.

I am greatly opposed to no gas engines I wouldn't mind a TT V8 + electric motor for instant torque but otherwise no

Yep, just look at all the "First Impressions of BMW's like the F30 and G30" where they were flown out to drive prototypes/pre-production vehicles. They had positive things to say. Once the full reviews/instrument tests come out, true opinions come out. As we saw by the 3 and 5 series losing many comparisons and being slammed by the press.

Been saying it for the past decade. BMW can't make a damn car for their lives now. Stock up on the oldies because the new garbage just farts and crackles while looking like trash.

No reason to consider 2GC over Golf R.

If I buyt FWD based AWD car, it will be either Gold R or Audi S3.
They have done it for so long.

If not VW, I would still consider A35 or GLA35 before 2GC.

There are many other (better) options in that category.

How is it not a proper BMW when the company produced AWD E30's between 1985-1992 and AWD E34's between 1991-1996 (...also recall the AWD E46's)? It would seem that your perspective on the company needs refreshing.

Those cars were 50/50 setups. This is 100/0 until slip is detected. Perhaps not a big deal to some, but definitely not "the same."

It's amusing when people make declarations about what a "real bmw" is and isn't, or make sweeping comments about what bmw is all about. The problem is, that their interpretation of what a bmw is supposed to be is typically based on subjective preferences. Often these preferences are based on what the critic's first bmw was - a tiny sliver of bmw's history and product line.

That's not accurate. The center differential had a default front/rear torque split ratio of 37:63 due to the design of the planetary gear. Up to 80% of the torque could be distributed.

VW is gearing up for a rather serious BEV Offense that BMW better not take too lightly.

This means very little from someone driving a hulking AWD SUV tank.

So instead they can get a dorky BMW sedan? Let's not act like this doesn't look like a Bavarian Econobox.
