Your Opinion: Light Poplar Wood in Black Interior?

I am ordering my new 330i. I was thinking of getting the Light Poplar wood because the Burl Walnut is pretty dark, compared to MBZ or other car's Burl Walnut. Gets really lost in a black interior.

But, I looked at the Light Poplar and it's really very light.... more than I expected.

Has anyone seen a Black Interior with Light Poplar wood? Do you have any pictures?

Any opinions would be welcomed.

Thanks.

I love poplar with black...been getting compliments from people Overall, I am very happy with it, great (much needed) contrast in an all black interior.

I have to tell you, poplar is hard to photograph, almost all the pics here show the wood a couple of shades brighter (its duller irl), you really have to see it for yourself. I was unsure of poplar myself but after seeing it for the first time, the choice was easy. Walnut burl (too dark and glossy) looks more artificial than poplar on which you can see the natural grain and texture. In some light it even has a little sparkle to it.

I have a crappy pic of my interior...not a fair representation I'm afraid...lousy photo skills you can estimate the tone of the wood based on the color of my interior (black) which looks greyish in the pic...

I went with poplar after seeing it in the Official Interior thread (here). I was initially worried it would be too light, like Ikea furniture, but it isn't and I think it makes a nice change from walnut. Also, my g/f said she preferred the grain of the poplar, so that sealed it...

Thanks for the very quick replies. The pictures are just fine and helped a lot. I think I am leaning for LIGHT POPLAR because it's unique. That Burl Walnut is SO dark compared to other car makers.

I don't know why BMW went so dark. It's almost dark brown -- almost black looking.

Thanks again for your help.

I think that the walnut is too dark and am very very happy with my choice of poplar with black leather interior.

It is only a few shades lighter than the walnut but that makes a big difference and the wood looks more like wood.

I went with Burled Walnut because it matches with the leather. Something about black leather with dark wood that got my attention.

With black, I think you could do any trim. Personally I went with walnut. If I went with beige interior, I would have gone with poplar.

You have to see it in person. Looking at pictures is not the best way to decide.
I personally don't like the Poplar with any color and went with the dark wood on black. I think it blends in more with the black were the Poplar sticks out. It may not look too bad on the dash but it really sticks out on the console. Again, just my personal taste.

They all do look great with black....... aluminum as well ....... got to look at em a few times before you make your choice ......... started with a pref for the clean look of aluminum, then was convinced I wanted poplar .... then sat in a TiaG with Black and Burl one day, and that was it for me ......... I don't feel the darker burl blends away with the black .but admittedly less contrast ...... If you select one of the two woods choices, consider springing for the matching shifter ... can't really explain why, but the wood and leather nob feels better to the toch when shifting to me ...... (at least during the cold of winter!) ...... good luck!

I think the varied responses show that this is a matter of personal taste. I didn't like the poplar with the black and went with the walnut, but others really dislike my combo... feast your eyes, and if it floats your boat, go for it.

The contrast will look very good. The walnut is dark and wouldn't show as well against black. A friend has poplar in his X3 and I really like it.

I chose the burl walnut with the black leather because I didn't like the light color; too much of a contrast. The exterior is Monaco Blue. It's pretty much an individual taste. I didn't like the lightness of the grey or the beige interior. Probably gonna regret it come summer. But wait, I'm in England...we don't get summer.

Really depends on your aesthetic reaction to contrast. The walnut burl does not stand out as much from the black. The poplar is more 'woody' -- you see more of the grain and texture, and it catches your eye, whereas the walnut blends in. If I were to get poplar with black, I would probably be more concerned with matching the other odds and ends in the interior, e.g., getting a poplar shift knob. I like them both, and if push came to shove (i.e., no alcantara option), I would go for biege with poplar. Black is a harder choice, all trim options very nice. I think the 'woodier' nature of poplar would be especially nice with mystic, monaco, and deep green; fine with arctic, titanium, SG, and the blacks; I would have to see it with the reds.

Second to that. What will look better than aluminum on black?
