RIP Wade Belak

Horrible news today, Wade really was an incredible guy and played with heart. Such a disturbing off season for the NHL and for enforcers. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

Shit. This is the third time this year that an NHL player has been found dead. This is really scary stuff. I don't know what the hell is going on behind the scenes, but NHL needs to see some drastic changes to save the players' lives. RIP.

The game in the NHL has changed so much in the last 10 years. The equipment's getting harder (the hard ABS plastic stuff instead of the pads now), the game's way more grittier, and hits to the head are getting more common now.

Sad news about Belak. Not sure about whether it's concussion-related but I wouldn't be surprised. The NHL really needs to start looking into penalizing headshots much more than they do now to really make concussions a rare injury in hockey or we'll see more of this stuff.

For what it's worth, Belak said very recently he had never had a concussion. Not sure if he would be even able to diagnose one, but that's what he said.

Really sad, he was my favourite fighter during his stint with the Leafs. His LeafsTV segments he did were hilarious, a really personable guy.

Yep, Wade a Minute was hilarious. He really was a spark, and had a great personality. Its just aweful, he had a wife and two little girls. We are waiting to hear about to cause of death but something tells me it was not concussion related. In any event, this is a terrible loss.

I wonder if its related to the fact he was a fighter. These guys take multiple blows to the head. Lots of boxers also have tonnes of problems after retiring...a lot of old WWE/WWF wrestlers have passed early too...I wonder if its also related to the various drugs and medications as well....

The league should seriously look into establishing some sort of professional consulting or program aimed at problematic players in an effort to ward off potential issues and deal with life after hockey. Just like a war veteran or an over the hill rock star, these hard nosed enforcers need to learn to cope not living in the thick of the action. I guess you mentally already commit suicide when losing your spirit. The next step is to physically go through with it. A very sad day.

I've noticed that as well. In fact I was just listening to a news story on ESPN radio yesterday about Oscar de la Hoya, who admitted he had thought about suicide on several occasions in the past few years (he also had alcohol and drugs problems since retiring from boxing).
