My X3 M rolled backward - is this supposed to happen?

I Purchased a brand new 2020 X3M earlier this year. Was loading up my car to head to work when disaster struck. I pulled the car forward so I could put my backpack in the rear seat, put the car in park, then exited the car.

BMW (corporate) told me the reason it happened was because the car was in carwash mode (whatever that means).

Thoughts??

I'm guessing neutral and really sorry that happened. But happy you didn't get injured that could have gone much much worse.

ps- not saying it doesn't exist but i have never heard of "car wash mode" would love to hear the dealers explanation of that one

That is really upsetting. Knocked the wind out of just watching.

I've only had a late model BMW automatic as a loaner and can't even recall how to even put them in neutral.

Damn!

I did that in a rental car once, has scared the shit out of me For life. I find myself double and triple checking I’m in park before I open the door to exit the vehicle.

The dealership told me that putting the car in "Park" only locks the transmission and not the wheels. However, if you open the door from Drive it automatically goes to Park.

I hit the Park button before I got out. I did NOT put it in Neutral.

car wash mode is a setting in IDrive under parking that shows a line into the drive through car wash.

According to the data that BMW gave me, the car was put into car wash mode a total of 19 times. Never once has putting the car into carwash mode put the car into neutral. It ONLY changes the camera view on the idrive system.

Putting the car into carwash mode would have taken me a lot longer than 10 seconds which was the duration of the entire video.

Even if you say you had it in park, everyone is going to believe it was in neutral unless you have video proof of the dash. But this is why I use the parking brake every time I put it in park.

You would think the car would record that type of stuff. BMW won't give me the data either.

Fuuuuuuuuuu.....

But, a hell of a lot better than $30K in medical bills.

Glad you're alright, really hope BMW steps in and pays for this though.

That is what the Parking Brake is for. So if parking pawl in transmission fails or car is not properly put in park, the vehicle does not roll. Always engage parking brake, then let go of foot brake If car does not roll. That is when u exit vehicle. Glad you did not get hurt. Expensive life lesson there.

I watched the video literally uttered "fucckkkkkkkkkkkk" and then scrolled and saw your message.

That's an insane amount of damage to the car - what needs to be replaced exactly to make up $16k?

Glad you are okay, but I've had my X3M for about 4 weeks now and constantly put it into Neutral when I'm trying to put it into Reverse. I'm used to simply knocking the shifter "up" to throw it into reverse, but it's not that easy on these cars. Not sure if this is what happened to you...but that's a scary video to watch. Glad you made it out safely.

Oof not good. I've had it in neutral and thought it was in park a couple of times. Of course not gonna know what the real situation was here but sorry this happened no matter why it happened. I'll second using the parking brake at this point.
