Buying a used EV

We are looking for a new car, an SUV for family/dog outings and holidays, plus usual shorter distance stuff.

EVs seem to be incredibly good value ATM, a 2020 Audi e tron for example with relatively low mileage can be had for c. 20k, or a fully loaded 2022 Ionic 5 for 25k. Is there any reason to shy away from a EV? We can charge at home.

Any recommendations?

The only thing you have to do is make sure any software is bang up to date. EV's are iPads with wheels and motors. The up to date software does make a difference to efficiency and practicality.

VW ID4 or ID5 are well built and roomy. Really good new lease deals available
Ionic 5 is a very good car and I think supports V2L
Audi E-trons did have a few early problems
Skoda Enyaq is a great car
Polestar 2 - Not sure if the dog will fit in

No reason to shy away IMHO. I'd take a Hyundai/Kia over something German on a reliability/warranty basis. As I would with ICE.

Teslas have been around forever relatively and the tech is proven, so that would be the other obvious option.

If it's your only car a tesla model y seems the best bet. The rest are still hampered by efficiency issues in relation to creature comfort that adds excess weight. If you holiday frequently and remote places etc EV could be an added stress as chargers aren't readily available and if they are they'll take hours to fill the battery at 7/11kw/hr in rural scenic Scotland and Wales etc. It requires mental effort and luck but overall for commuting a used ev makes financial and comfort related sense

The 50 Etron models have a very poor range, owners reporting about 140 miles real life which isn’t great. Plenty of others have decent ranges and so long as they are in warranty I would most certainly go for one.

Don't overlook the KIA eNiro - both versions (i.e. Gen 1 & 2) have been reviewed very positively.

Ionic 5 would also be in my list.

Tesla MY if you can get past the looks and the extremely minimalist interior.

Thanks all, I like the ionic 5 best I think, 25k for a 2yr old ultimate addition with 5yrs of warranty left feels like a good buy. Will have to have a spin in one.

EV6 is also a decent drive and very similar to the Ioniq 5.

Yeah I think they are a bit more expensive and I like the fact that the ionic looks like a spaceship 🚀

I think the Ioniq 5 for 25k with a 5 year warranty is great value. Although one mans spaceship is another mans 21st century Austin Maestro.

But have you seen the size of the boot ? Tiny for a car of that size.

Avoid an EV and buy a good old diesel would be my advice.

Range anxiety is a real thing if you are considering doing any reasonable to long journeys.

Oh no.....you've gone and upset the 'EV applecart' again!

Honestly. This forum is supposed to be F3x series based. Don't have a problem with digression, but it is becoming more of an EV 'love in' every day TBH.

Every other thread seems to reference those God-awful looking things with washing machine motors.

Just for balance, I was looking at XKR-S Jags and M6s earlier, with their 550bhp, petrol-guzzling, snarling V8s.

On a more practical note....because your EV doesn't need a front grille to cool the radiator, the manufacturers have started deleting them and have a painted panel instead.

With your equivalent of 4,000nm of torque, and 0-60 times of nano seconds, imagine the stone chips! Seriously, imagine the state of those after 6 months.

I mean yeah - I think we call that grasping.

You don't really have to imagine anything, it's not like the first EV's hit the roads last week!

Too busy driving them to worry about stone chips. On that note I am now 20k miles in on the day I have owned it for 20 months.... That is more miles than I did in the M5 and RS4 combined, and nearly as many as I did in the SQ5...

Funny how 10 years ago there were massive debates/arguments on petrol vs diesel.

Now its any ICE car vs EV.

Once we are all on EV's in 10-15 years time, there will be nothing to argue about.
Or I suspect there will be something else around the corner....
