Coolant Warning Then Disappeared
So I had a coolant level warning but before I called BMW Assist it had disappeared from the diagnostics after a mile or two. Now off.
Rum do! Anyone experienced this and what was the outcome. |

I had to top up the water in mine at about 40k after getting the coolant light. On one hand it's a closed system and shouldn't need topping up, ever. It is due a service soon so I'm tempted to ask them to investigate.
On the other hand, it's done 17k since putting 1/2 litre of water in to top up so it doesn't seem to be a developing problem. Coolant leaks/consumption tend to get worse. I would check the level and see how it looks, top up with distilled water if necessary and get it checked out by the dealer. |

I had these symptoms right before the EGR valve had a catastrophic failure on the A34 - just for info.
I'd get it checked, although they'll probably say it's fine and not find the fault, just like they did with mine, then you'll be stranded one day...

Egr valve or egr cooler? Just trying to understand the link between coolant and egr fault?

The report said the coolant had been bumped into the exhaust manifold if that helps?

I was topping up my washer fluid and I noticed the coolant reservoir was a bit low. I topped it up with about 500ml to bring it back up to the level and I've seen no drop since... my car is going in on Wednesday for some work anyway so I will mention it to them |

BMW Assist were mega helpful and patient with me. PS the BMW technician says its odd but he'd never seen this fault at all until about a month ago and now he's had 4 in one month. Age of cars perhaps he said? Last edited by Tom Tallon; 08-29-2016 at 05:40 AM.. |

Not just BMW Audi egr coolers have had issues too, the welds kept breaking causing coolant to be lost / burned off in the exhaust manifold same as yours I presume

How far down the header tank has the level dropped for you guys?
Having read this one just looked at mine, it's just under the join of the header slightly lower than the tip of the triangle that I assume is there to point at the correct level, literally not even a third of the way down the small triangle. Is that the type of drop your talking about here? Or a but more. Annoyingly I don't know if it's always been at that level, quite poss as it's always looked full to the mid point and never considered it any further until now. Apologies for high jacking |

My level was at least 2 inches below what you describe. Indeed the BMW technician said you should look at a level at around the join in the plastic container as normal. By all means mention it if you are worried at a service but it looks like you are in no current difficulty with the coolant level. TT |

Tbh it may well have always been at that level. It's only just below join. Service due in 3k so like you advise, I'll keep an eye on it and mention it then. |
