Took Delivery Yesterday!!!

I handed over a big check and received in return the keys (keyfobs actually) to my new ride.

I placed my order on June 29, took delivery on August 13, so total of 45 days start to finish. The car was actually delivered on Friday 8/12, but I couldn't go pick it up. During my wait, I particularly enjoyed reading other's accounts and impressions at delivery so I will do the same here. Pardon me if I go into unnecessary detail.

My car: 2006 E90 325i, Alpine White exterior, Terra interior, Burl Walnut trim, Premium Package, Steptronic Automatic Transmission, Xenon Adaptive Headlights, Fold Down Seats, Satellite Prep

Delivery - When my wife, three children and I arrived at the dealership in College Station, TX, they had the car parked in the showroom, so we all had the opportunity to see the car up close, out of the 97 deg. F (36 deg. C) heat. Of course, my kids ages 10/8/5 were all excited and milling around like a bunch of ants, asking questions, and generally stirring things up in the showroom. They couldn't figure out how to get the car out of the showroom. Anyway, after a bit, my wife took two of the three, and left for the drive back to Houston (Katy actually), leaving me alone at the dealership with my 5-year old daughter. I completed the paperwork, listened to the extended warranty/extended maintenance salespitch, gave the lady the check, and sealed the deal. I financed through Aggieland Credit Union, which makes my skin crawl a bit, since I bleed burnt orange, but they gave me a half percent better rate than competitors. For you folks outside the US and Texas, this refers to Texas A&M University (aggies), and University of Texas, bitter rivals.

The CA went over the various features of the car, but by this point, all I wanted to do was drive, so I didn't pay a lot of attention, and didn't learn much I didn't already know. We did pair up my Motorola V710 telephone to the Bluetooth, which went flawlessly. The floormats were included in the deal, without having to ask, or haggle, they were just there when I took delivery. All in all, a pleasant experience at the dealer, even with the kids.

Then, the 100 mile drive home. The car had 6 miles on it when I started up! I pulled out from the dealership, and enjoyed my first few minutes of BMW ownership.

My first impressions

Overall - nice quiet interior at 80 mph, crisp handling, brisk acceleration, smooth ride. Everything a BMW should be.

Throttle response - I notice the throttle hesitation at startup. Others have posted that this goes away in 1000-2000 miles, and I would look forward to that, because at this point, I characterize the throttle response as sluggish at low speeds. Of course that is more than made up for at 60-80 mph. I wonder if the Valvetronic technology and the idea of throttling the engine directly through the intake valves may have something to do with this. Another thought is that the 325i intake manifold is not optimally tuned for low engine speeds. I will continue to form my impressions.

Seats - Non sport seats are adequate, comfortable, not particularly grippy, and quite adjustable with the power option in the premium package. I would say I'm neutral on the seats.

Rain sensing wipers - Cool! I went through a light afternoon shower during my drive, the wiper function works great. They come on as needed, modulate speed and frequency to effectively keep the rain off the windscreen. How depraved am I that need the rain sensing wipers? At least this depraved!

Steptronic Transmission - Works great, buttery smooth, no problems. I don't want a manual for my driving, and the steptronic is the best auto transmission I've seen.

Bluetooth - I made a call on the phone and experienced the Bluetooth technology - great featrure, works well, very clear sound, but I'll need to learn some more on accessing the phone book, voice commands, etc.

Xenon's - Wow. Like daylight. High beams are brighter than daylight. Awesome.

Complaints - Outside mirrors turn down to view the ground for backing, but don't return to the regular position. This happened three times, and I add to reset the mirrors each time. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. I moved the mirror selector switch to the right, so maybe this will stop.

Also, does the car not come with an owner's manual? I got the leather binder with several different pamphlets in it, but no "owner's manual" that can tell me about these features. There is a quick start CD/DVD, which is helpful, and I've downloaded the manual from this forum, but up til now, I have not located the actual manual.

That's all for now, I'm going out to drive. No pics yet - dead bugs on the front bumper, and grime from the rainstorm. I will need to clean it up some for the photo shoot.

Happy motoring!!

Have you saved your proper mirror position in the seat memory ?
It is supposed to go back to the saved position

Ditto on E90Fleet's comment. You should save your settings by pressing the "M" then "1" buttons and then the mirrors should return to the correct position.

No owners's manual? It is possible that it was forgotten or misplaced. Your salesman probably used it during the speech and might have forgotten to put in back in the kit. I would call them and ask, and tell them to FedEx you an owner's manual. You need that. You can find it in PDF format in the downloads section of this forum in the meantime.

BTW - congrats on the new baby. Hope you have many years of enjoyment!

I did get the tool kit, but have not had a chance to check air pressure in the tires - I've thought about doing it, but currently its pouring rain (though I did wash dead bugs off the bumper in the rain).

Thanks men, but what is a fob ?

http://www.meguiars.com/ makes an really good bug remover. In Florida we get those LOVE BUGS every couple of years. The juice from these bugs and other bugs get under the paint if not removed in a couple hours. I use their bug remover ( the best ), Before I do that I use their Quick Detailor first. ( you could "Wash" a whole car with this product, if it's not that dirty.)

Congratulations.... I'm sure you will enjoy every mile with a smile.

Hopefully the throttle response will improve as you go past the break in period. Mine was a bit difficult to change from first gear to 2nd, but that difficulty has gradually disappeared, and my changes are smooth now.

Happy motoring... or should I say

I ordered my 325i on June 27th. According to 1-800 number, it has been sitting at port of exit for since August 1st. WTF??

The 800 number is not very accurate. I kept very close track of my vehicle, and the 800 number lady still thinks it's in transit, even though I took delivery on Saturday. The best thing is to contact your CA to find out the exact status.

I took your advice and contacted my CA. As far as he knows, the car is still sitting in port in Germany. I’m crossing my fingers that it is on a ship and the system hasn’t been updated properly. It’s for a west coast delivery, and I’ve gathered that the shipping company BMW uses for west coast does not provide as accurate detail as east coast deliveries.

I’m a patient man, so I’ll sit tight. But mind you, I’m currently driving a 1996 GMC Jimmy with 180,000 miles on it. I’ve been taking countless trips to Mt. Rainer and the Olympic Mountains over the last few months and just about any curve over 30 mph is a white knuckle experience in the Jimmy.
