Interesting to see how much BMW is borrowing from the aftermarket. forged carbon, those ugly canards.

Another thing I noticed - why would the kidney grill and lower bumper grill have different patterns? Who thought that looked good.

20 year old me loves it but couldn't afford it. 35 year old me can afford it but probably shouldn't buy it lol. I'm glad BMW has finally made something fun in the hot hatch market. Besides the fake M badge on the back that we know isn't going anywhere anytime soon... I like it!

Chopped Carbon Fibers are what are put into a mold and forged. I guess you might be able to use the terms to a point interchangeably, but the finish product is described as forged carbon fiber.

Calling the finished pieces chopped carbon fiber is like calling a tire, "sheets of rubber"

Different designers made a compromise.

True enough. However, much of the criticism being expressed - including complaints about the drive wheels and the large grill - will also apply to its three-box twin, the F44 2 Series Gran Coupe. And that vehicle will be sold here starting early next year (debuts this November in LA).

Not that I’m advocating prejudgment, mind you, but I think some of the concerns being shared are valid. While I fully understand the business decisions that lead to this new breed of FAAR-based small BMW models, I still think it is a shame that BMW’s lack of foresight has prevented them from building a proper small EV lineup on the i3’s platform.

Pretty sure BMW will end up releasing a 400ps M1 as well to battle the A45 and RS3. Yes, BMW M said no 4 cylinder hardcore M models... But times are changing, the paradigm is shifting, downsizing is inevitable, engines will be losing cylinders all across the board until full electrification takes over, while demand for premium hot hatches won't be running out and BMW can't afford to leave Audi and Mercedes the whole cake for philosophical reasons.

The next M2 will remain RWD so who knows, technically it might keep its 6 cylinders.

While that is a possibility (though perhaps not by the "M1" name), I'm skeptical. Nothing is on the near horizon, and BMW has said recently that future investments into gasoline powertrains will be minimal. More than likely this precludes development of any 400hp version of the B48 - ostensibly an "S48". A case could be made for a hybrid drivetrain instead, but that would still require a large cash outlay.

A better direction at this point might be to plan for a high performance version of whatever small BEV lineup is inevitably being developed for the later half of next decade.

In fact, it's all but 100% certain that the next M2 will be powered by an I6. The reason is that they can share the drivetrain M3/M4/X3M/X4M rather than developing a new engine specifically for just one vehicle.

Well I for one believe not only that the investment for building a stronger version of this 4 pot would be minimal versus building an all-new engine from the ground up as was the case in the past (and I'm pretty sure they've already gone half the way by researching/testing the option), but that they'd have the nerve to name it M1 and claim that deep down it has inherited the original M1's genes of raw sportiness and is simply a modern reinterpretation wrapped in a more complete package in line with today's needs for interior space, 4 door usability, AWD capability and 4 cylinder low emissions

Just going by what Aston Martin calls it on their website

The wheel gap makes the car look like an CUV. Needs to be lowered an inch at the very least if not more. Looks a little boy racer but that's typically the demographic that is purchasing entry level cars. My biggest take is just how bad forged CF looks once implemented on mirror housings and diffusers. I really hope that BMW doesn't incorporate this into future M2, M3/M4, etc as it looks like marble which is fine for a counter top but not on a performance car.

There has never been an M hatchback. There has been two generations of M models of it’s coupe brother though, and neither used anything close to an all-new engine. In fact, they didn’t even use an M engine at all until the latest Competition model, and that engine was borrowed straight from the M3.

Obviously M products from eras gone by had unique engines, but that ship sailed long ago.

If BMW could spare the money right now to bring a proper 1M, M2 GC, X1/X2 M, to market to answer the RS3 Sportback, RS3 Sedan, Q3 RS, A45, CLA45, and GLA45 they would not hesitate to do so.

As they’ve no doubt tested a 600hp I6 and 800hp V8 as well, neither of which is likely to see duty in a production vehicle.
