Oil advice needed
I checked my oil today, in anticipation of my long drive mid-january (I like being well prepared!)
On checking the dipstick (yes, diesel cars do still have a dipstick) the oil level is a little above the minimum level. The manual states that one must NOT add any oil unless you see the oil level low warning light - or the distick reading is just below the minmum level. I was thinking maybe I should just go buy a bottle of topup oil from BMW Service, and use say 3/4 of it - as I would hate this oil warning to pipe up during my drive, or even during my holiday (when it might be diffucult to get the right oil) What do you think? |

I think its OK to top up, as long as you don't go above maximum - I'd rather do that, than risk seizing the engine, if perhaps the warning light didn't work?

Only reason manual say to wait is because most people just go and dump in a whole bottle when the oil is only slightly down, causing the car to be overfilled.
1 bottle is equivalent to the amount of oil from minimum to max on the dipstick. So go to BMW, get the correct oil, and put in 3/4 of a bottle |

just fill in slowly in increments, like 1/4 at a time and observe the gauge, so you dont overfill.
