I would submit it. What is the worst that can happen?

The car has never run the same, even with the new engine. I just brought it in for the CV joint recall. It doesn’t look like they replaced the transfer case. They seemed to focus on the flex disc—told me that they had to put in a “case” with BMW to do so. |

I just got mine back from the dealer after a WEEK! Terrible experience again... but they are 6 miles from home. Took it in for the "Flex Disc" recall and complained of some low tone groaning from the front end above 70mph (knew it was a wheel bearing.)
Im at 91,723 miles now (2014 MY with 07/13 Prod. Date) and it was dropped off with 91,618 I drove 36 today after picking it up. But I noticed they had the car for a week didn't communicate with me the entire time and as it turns out they replaced just the guibo and a right front wheel bearing (extended warranty thankfully so I paid my $100 deductible). I still have some power loss issues coming out of a corner is this something I should complain to the dealer about? Its frustrating g the car was there for a week and all they did was the flex disc. And to top it off looks like the tech was enjoying his time in my car and spitting lougies out of the driver window as there was a huge one all down the driver door when I picked up... 🤬 Last edited by cameron_jf30d; 06-11-2020 at 09:33 PM.. |

I believe that's part of the extended warranty for diesels

It is on extended warranty, but seeing how they changed the sprayer for DEF, I wonder if there is more to the story from the dealer's side of things.

I am going to bring it back tomorrow.
The car has 60k miles and never had that code or any problems with the DEF system. Thanks for picking that up Enabled, I did not even realized they changed that at first.

I'm glad I found this thread. Very informative! I appreciate the photos posted to show what actually wears out. I've heard about people having multiple failures but never knew what actually failed. That is a terribly designed output flange. If my transfer case is original it has 180k miles on it. I'll have to look around for a build date. I wonder if having an n55 and a 6MT might help prevent this failure.

Just make sure you have the rubber giubo anyways, and try not to deviate from the approved tire sizes, and it will last.

I've seen more inside info regarding this and the Service Bulletin from BMW.
BMW does indeed blame the aluminum flex disc, the counter vibration onto the output flange, and the abrasive action of the worn flange rust speeding up the process of wear. Interestingly, they didn't propose this SIB for the gas 320xi/328xi which would benefit as well. The proposed fix to go to a rubber giubo and stopping the wear on the flange is still very relevant and valid. There are no updates to the transfer case nor the output flange. Loctite and rubber giubo should fix this one right up for its lifetime.

Super thread! Bought my 328d Touring 9/19 with about 55K miles on it. Soon became aware of the EGR recall but didn't think I was having any issues. Then I got the letter from BMW/NA about the transfer case plate. Finally got off the bubble when I started getting CELs for NO2 sensors.
Took the wagon into my dealer and two weeks later, have new EGR pump, new NO2 sensors, new giubo, and new transfer case! Seeing this thread and the pictures really helped me understand the significance of the recall. I had no idea this would involve replacing the transfer case but, wow, am I glad BMW stood tall and did all the work! The only charge I got was because I requested they replace the 5 year old battery! k Feeling like I got a reprieve from the warden! |

You have the older aluminum giubo.
Change it to the 105mm rubber one and enjoy a bit less vibration and more protection. Loctite if you wish.

Is it worth it to do at 44k miles? Or is it just too late at this point lol.

Yes, the sooner the better on the rubber giubo, plus inspection of the flange. If you're at the giubo, you might as well do the loctite treatment if flange is not severely loose.

X Drive F31 320D / 328D solution
Hi
I wanted to share my recent experience with my 320D F31 M Sport, the transfer case issue and its successful cure. Symptoms shown by my car were: - Following a change of tyres (all 4 at the same time and BMW * Rated Firestone Potenza's) the car started Jerking under acceleration in a straight line. Ie: the classic transfer box damage issue. - Wobble / Vibration under braking, felt through the steering wheel. - Vibration on the motorway generally from rear end, and felt through the seat. I gave the car over to my local specialist independent. We looked through this forum together, especially the BMW ATC 35L Transfer Case Repair and a Prevention Method Thread. It took several weeks for him to fix all the issues but after some false starts this was his final methodology. Essentially working methodically through the car. - Buy a secondhand transfer case, ensuring the part numbers / serial numbers were correct. £400 - Take transfer case apart and swap out the output flange for a new one £140 + lab - Refill with oil, reset lights and re programme = 2 1/2 hours labour - Rebalance all wheels, where a rear wheel was found to be slightly buckled and took a lot of weights to fix (hence vibration on smooth motorway roads). - Change front suspension bushes, and replace all disks and pads. - It transpired that with front suspension bushes being perished this kept on making itself felt as a warped disk / rotor vibration to other mechanics, who previously then would replace the disks unececssarily. I have read about all these symptoms at length on this forum, so I hope this systematic approach helps. All - in it cost £1,400, but has transformed the car. It accelerates, brakes and turns like it should, and like it used to in fact. I am delighted with the result. Happy to pass on the details of the garage concerned, which is located SW of London. R |

Nice! Do you have pictures of the old output flange?
