Garage List
2014 BMW 335d  [0.00]
I bought a 12v pump off amazon for about a tenner.

Put long thin hose down the dipstick tube, thicker hose into a jerry can for collecting the old oil.
Connect pump to terminals in the engine bay and switch on.

While it's sucking out the oil I change the filter.

I used QX oil in my last Seat PD 150 for 10 years.
It may not be related but it was never abused and dropped a valve at 10.5 years.
Strangely, it was also the same morning I phoned to make an appointment to view my current BMW.
Did the Seat know I was thinking of moving on and said I will show you ?
Was it the cheap oil from ECP ?
Who knows for sure, but I wont be putting cheap stuff in that costs less than a tank of fuel in future.

This for me:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/FreeTec-Man...ve%2C88&sr=1-2

It's been faultless and is very easy to use...

Yeah and you know why, right? Because it's the drain method the dealers use Why else would they make sure it's well hidden and not the usual bright orange or yellow

I use one of these:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Siegen-S011...49287248&psc=1

It empties the sump pretty quickly!

Makes no sense...

You've absolutely no proof that it was the oil that caused it; you'd used it for 10 years; yet you appear to blame it directly...

Thanks everyone for your replies.I realise one thing I’ve took this to a reputable garage for a health check after I bought it.They said all good with the car.Took it to BMW dealer for a check they said only turbo is a bit noisy and the tyres bla blah. The bloody garages never been honest. They like breaking down the cars I guess. I have found the dipstick funny how even the seller said they don’t come with dipsticks anymore only electric gauges.By the way I liked the car cos it has got Msport suspensions with chassis. The dive is amazing with lots of power. I was thinking of getting rid of the car but on the other hand if I put a new engine I can drive it for few more years.Any advice on how to choose an engine or shall I leave it to the garage?

I'd find a specialist that deals with these cars, as an example ADC in Manchester and get them to sort it...

They're well known & well thought of FYI; so would be worth the fees for someone to trailer it there and back; or get it trailered there & then get the train there to collect & enjoy the road trip home. It's not far

Get the car warm, pull out the dipstick , remove oil filter and loosen the oil fill cap. Stick the tube down the dipstick hole and pump away.

I would get another qoute or few to compare, sounds a lot for that job, but then you don't know the full damage there is, question is do you like the car? I think you will straggle to find another 330D for 6.5k plus if is just the bearings I would say should be around the £3k mark for repair.

Exactly why I posted it. Some people can take things too literally.

That what I thought.price for refurbished engine is too much.I really like the car cos it’s got M sport chassis and the dampers. Also powerful engine. There are few garages around here they do German cars I’ll ask them.My friends say get rid of the car but too much money to waste.

Honestly speak to garage and arrange for car to be towed for inspection, just bearings is far fetched guess without dropping the guts down, no one will know the extend of damage done, don't know if you mechanically minded or not or if you know someone that can drop the sump down, obviously you have additional problems with the fueling, with that knock this car won't be worth much to sell on so all in all you would be loosing lot more then repair cost, I would base my decision what to do base on my own financial situation, and you need to work that one out your self. Can't help more then that and good luck with it, hope you get it sorted one way or another.

How do you know this; or is it that it just feels expensive to you?

ADC are very well respected and they do a LOT of these engines; so if that's the price they're giving then that'll be the right ballpark figure; more so with an engine that they'll have fully serviced and will also offer warranty on!

Think you need to do a bit more research for binning off a quote like that without fully understanding what's involved etc

i dont think hes disregarding their work
but 6500 +vat is expensive - thats £7700 nearly 2/3rds of the value of his car, wouldn't make financial sense.

you could but another high mileage 330d f30 for that kind of price or easily get an f30 320d

Yup; but with both those ideas; you're still taking a serious risk with little to no fall back/warranty

Whereas a professionally fitted refurbed engine from the likes of ACD, or similar, will be done properly & warrantied...

That's a lot of peace of mind as well and not just buying another car and then wondering 'what if'...

If it were me, I'd drop it off somewhere for an assessment to get rid of any speculation.

Identify and compression check/leak down test the knocking cylinder and go from there.

You will then know if you're looking at a repair of one cylinder, or an entire engine block.

BMW want 10K for a new long block iirc, plus VAT and obviously fitting. If that kind of money isn't necessary, don't spend it, just repair the busted cylinder.
