Is it worth changing oil in a 335i every 5000 after 41k miles of not doing it?
I only changed my oil once myself at 5000 miles. Other than that I just followed BMW's intervals. Is it worth starting to change it every 5k or is it too late. I just started getting so busy that I didnt do what I originally intended on doing, which is change it every 5000 miles. thanks in advance for any opinions. Overall the car has only had 4 oil changes in 41k miles. I know...its bad.

I say yes. It sure isn't going to hurt, and may be even more important as the car ages.

Why are the BMW recommended intervals bad? If BMW thinks the car can do 10k every oil change then why are you that worried? I figure the engineers there know a bit more about the N54 than we do...

If you are running mods though, I would certainly recommend doing it in more intervals than every 15k. |

Im not THAT worried. If I was I wouldnt have not done it every 5k. Just remember there is $$ involved on BMW's end. Its not always what best for the car but whats best for profits. Im sure its fine too but I bought out the lease at a rediculously low price of 24,700 at 31k miles and I need it to last.

If the car is stock then regular intervals are fine. If you're running mods and got the boost up above stock then it would make sense to change it often.

The intervals really depend on how you use the car.
The 335 is not an M3. It's a sporty looking car, not a sports car. So it's got intervals that are appropriate for a daily driver and commuter. If you rag on your car and drive it like you stole it, you may want to consider your intervals. A purely commuter car that only cruises around can probably make due with 20k+ intervals if you're using fully synthetic. (fyi, I change oil myself every 2k miles. I like to keep it fresh and flushed. But I floor it pretty much *every* time I go. And I mean that literally. After I hit 6k miles on the odo I switched to rocket mode.) -scheherazade |

too tired to post the links.
tests have been performed on a chevy camaro (and possibly other cars) basically. synthetic oil was good for 15k miles or more (during the test) however the filter was the bad part and they recommend changing the filter ever 7k. so in other words if you confident about the oil in your car just replace the filter every 5k or so miles. our cars run super hot and this causes the suppliments in the oil to be consumed faster. mileage may vary. ppp

Do you really think they care what happens after the warranty expires? They are trying to give "free maintenance" at the cheapest price point possible. People have tested the oil time and time again on the forums, and all have proven 15k oil changes are dangerous to the longevity of the engine. It is not a matter of opinion, but a matter of scientific fact.

IT is exactly like Potty_Pants stated, synthetic oils nowadays even cope with constant high temperatures and do not degrade within 6-8k miles. The more wear you put on your engine, the more micro-abrasions of the engine metals you find in the oil. Changing your filter every 5k miles completely suffices. Just , there is plenty information around.
Mad EDIT* By the way, I change oil every 9k miles roughly (which is 15k kilometers). |

Its quite simple get an oil analysis done. You will soon see (like others have done) that 15k intervals are insane on a turbo car especially if its a DI car. Oil dilution is high on most DI cars. I plan to atleast change every 6 k miles. if an oil analysis indicates i plan to do it sooner. And yes i will end up using BMW synthetic oil / filter and hold on to the reciepts incase there is a problem down the road. I think a few oil changes are better than 15 k for a motor.

I dont hink BMW wants the reputation that there cars go bad after 50k.My service manager tells me all the time when we discuss it,why cant people get it in there heads that the r&d that went into the oil change intervals are fine at 15k.Even though i believe him i still get it done at 7500 miles.

For people living in the USA there should be no reason to not change your oil every 5k in your high performance twin turbo engines, oil changes only cost you about $45 in supply's and 20 minutes of your time.
Here in Italy the oil alone costs 35 euros A LITER, something to think about when discussing BMWs service intervals.

I don't have the time or the patience to change my own oil. However I have it changed well before 15K miles. You don't want to know how much the local foreign car shop charges to change it, but I'd rather do that than drive 3 hours round trip plus the waiting around time to get the oil changed at the dealer.

This is my 2nd turbo'd car and when I did my initial break in oil change, the oil was as black as I pictured it to be. To the OP, if I were in your position, I'd do it for the peace of mind. The oil change kit is around $60 from Tischer with free shipping. Takes 20 mins to do it. That's what I've been doing anyway, oil changes myself every 5k and get the freebies from dealership at the 15k and 30k interval. Just ordered another set from Tischer since my car is approaching the 40k mark now. BTW are you going to get the extended warranty/maintenance before 50k? |

If I leased my car, I wouldn't care because at the end of the day, it wouldn't be mine. But I bought it...$60 for every 5,000 miles is a cheap price for me not to go insane in the membrane. |

$50K car.
You're nuts to go 15K unless you're leasing or going to dump it after the free maintenance period. Especially on a twin turbo. Spend the $60 every 7500 miles or better yet 5K and change it yourself in between factory freebies. |

the results were as expected, high wear metals. Unfortunately I've never performed another test due to family responsibilities. ppp
