Any oil recommendations?
I like to keep a bit of spare oil in just in case I need to top up. Manual for my G21 suggests one of:
BMW Longlife-12 FE BMW Longlife-17 FE+ BMW Longlife-19 FE in either SAE 0W-20 or SAE 0W-30. Questions:

Pretty sure it's 0W-30 and Shell as that's BMW's current 'technology partner' since they switched from Castrol several years ago.
It's BMW Longlife but I have no idea which of the three you've listed. I'm aware they use a different rated oil in the M engines but assume it's not an M3 or M4 you're talking about? Maybe ask your BMW dealer to clarify? |

Edit: tried live chat. They didn't know, they only had the same info from the manual as I quoted above... Last edited by alFR; 04-26-2024 at 07:19 AM.. |

OK, update on this: went to the local BMW dealer and asked to buy some oil / if they knew what oil was in mine from factory. They took my reg number, found the VIN, then put that into their service system which told them my car needed LL04, 0W-30. I queried that vs the manual recommendations as quoted above, they said "what it says in the manual isn't what's in your car, this I what we would put in if we changed the oil here". So, I bought 1L of that but now I have literally no idea whether I actually have the right stuff or, if I do, why the manual apparently says the wrong thing.
Might put a post in the "what oil to use" thread in the maintenance forum and see what the resident experts there say, will report back if I learn anything... |

Last update (hopefully): no response in the "what oil" thread apart from a link to a useful tool that lets you compare the characteristics of different oils. I checked with another dealer selling the same LL04 0W-30 oil on Ebay, they confirmed it would be what they would use in my car at their workshop. So, looks like the manual doesn't contain all the compatible options. Will see what gets put in when the oil eventually gets changed!

I think the main thing is making sure its Long Life compliant and synthetic (I suspect one defines the other). Also the right SAE rating (ie: 0W30?). After that you're getting in the weeds, so to speak.
Also, I firmly believe that the factory fill is a "secret potion" type which is not generally known / avaialble in the dealer network. |

I'm more anxious to find out whether or not the oil filter has disintegrated as has happened often with other cars because then it will not be a two hour wait while it's done job but a six hour come back later one! Workshop fitting time for a replacement oil filter housing is four hours apparently...or two days if they don't have one in the parts department as the vehicle will be VOR until they get one! |

Btw, just looked at my 1st oil change service invoice from last year. Note states: "Shell Ultra Ext" for the oil, no further specs.
From Shell's own site they reccomend Helix Ultra ECT C5 0W-20 (SP). Not clear whether the above is the same. It took 5.3L (ie: units), its the 2.0 engine. |

Tenda to suggest that the absolute exact specification of the oil isn't so much of an issue nowadays to perhaps what it was in the past? |

Bmnut,
I agree with AZHusky. I don't know if the B58 in Europe with the particulate filter has a greater oil capacity than in the US, but overfilling happens often since dealers generally use bulk oil. My BMWs have never been overfilled by my dealer, but others have experienced this (and my previous Jaguar F Pace was over filled at every oil change necessitating a return trip to remove the extra oil). Check the oil in iDrive and make sure it is not over the full mark (do not rely on the oil Ok moniker). Overfilling can cause engine damage. |

I have ran the oil measurement in iDrive twice now and it is showing OK and is exactly on the max mark on the bar graph so I’m happy with those readings. I have no idea why my B58 has taken that amount but have used this dealer now for over twenty five years and trust their work. The senior tech who did the work is probably the most highly experienced at this dealership and is the only one who works on my cars. |

A trawl on the web reveals the current (latest) version of the B58 MHT engine, the European version with particulate filter which is mine has a refill capacity of 7.2 litres with a filter change apparently.
On that basis and supported by the measurement reading of the oil level on the idrive I’m confident there hasn’t been any overfill with my oil service. The point raised was certainly worthy of investigation though! |
