I know that this post is old but I know the engine whine that you are talking about. All the M V8 from the M5 to the X5M and all the current V8 models do this. It’s because there is no oil pressure at first, so the engine makes a whining noise until pressure is built. This is also presented when the car is stopped and the auto start/stop is activated. When you pull away, you’ll hear the engine whine until pressure is built again. At the end of the day, it’s 100% normal and does not negatively affect the engine. |

Sounds like a normal gear machine noise to me only thing that sucks worse than it being a problem is you having missed out on all the days of driving because of nothing.
If you have a warranty drive it until it blows up and then you'll know what the problem is. I don't understand you guys. We don't fix it if it ain't broke ..especially if you have a warranty |

my navigation screen would blink and act weird on me for the first three months of ownership. It would do it the most on the performance diagnostics screen, but rarely ever on the navigation map. so I knew that it was not a physical connection messed up or a ribbon not connected completely perfectly. I chalked it up to being a programming glitch.
I could've put my car in the dealership for weeks or months and they would've never figured anything out and I would've missed out on all kinds of stuff and techs would've been joy riding in my car and starting it and revving it up and who knows . brand new car with no miles on it . but I just didn't worry with it because my car drove and ran great. And wouldn't you know that BMW released an update for the car and I download it and my screen hasnt blinked or glitched since. I'm so glad I didn't overreact and miss out on all the driving |

Well it could be because the engine is slightly different. But the M8 definitely does make the whine noise.

Everytime this thread gets bumped to the top I read the title and think it’s about people who just bought an M5 are complaining/whining when the car starts lol.
