German newspaper claims BMW will build a G81
In their test drive article, the Munich based newspaper states that there will be a Touring version of the M3.

Doesn't mean it's going to happen, but it could be that the BMW board saw what the Audi/Mercs are doing and overruled Flasch, I am not sure how independent he really is. BMWNA wants that, doesn't mean that the mothership is on the same page. |

This came from Markus Flasch, the head director of the M division, sadly not just a case of the US being ignorant to the clearly better car. If you want a performance wagon AMG will happily oblige. There have been rumors every generation of an M3 wagon and one has yet to happen. BMW is in the game of profits, model cuts are coming and I would doubt something like an M3 wagon is in the plans.

This would be the ultimate kick to the nuts. BMW finally offers a M3 wagon and it looks like this ugly duckling. As much as I'd love to buy one because it's a wagon, I wouldn't out of principal thanks to looks.

Dunno if they didn't just get something wrong. They're the only German Media Outlet to report a G8x Wagon.
You'd think more than one Guy would have caught a whiff about a G81, that's BIG News. Last edited by Thunderstorm; 07-07-2020 at 12:32 AM.. Reason: Typo |

For you Europeans, a good option would be the Alpina B3. It's getting the S58 motor and comes in sedan or wagon form. Yeah it's not quite an M3, but if you're not taking it on track, it probably is the better option. A bonus is if you prefer normal sized grilles.

We forget when BMW say not in the foreseeable future that their interpretation of that appears to be about 2 weeks in the future

What’s the point of a performance wagon? Do people want to haul around stuff while going 0-60 in under 4 seconds? Are there people who actually like the look of a wagon over a sedan or coupe?

You could argue the same for Performance SUV's yet it seems like they are selling. Wagons aren't an alternative to Sedans or Coupes, they are an alternative to an SUV.

I would love an M wagon, I just want it in a manual. It makes sense, never understood why they did not do it, BMW has a lot of cars, why not a wagon?
It would be very popular, IMO. |

Won't be popular at all, at least not in the states. Taking rates for wagons in US are horrible tho.

Which means the chances of it happening at all are essentially zero. With the G20 having arrived in late 2018, we are already over a year and half in. Fast forward three more years, and there's simply no reasonable hope BMW would be planning any sort of M wagon and deliberately giving what would already be a low volume product a short <3yr life span.
Every generation we get rumors of an M3 touring, often from sources that claim to be highly reliable. But it has never happened before, and there's nothing compelling that should have us think any different this time. Unfortunate, sure, but that's the reality of the situation. |
