Best overtake on the with Sports Auto - kickdown or point of resistance before ?
Getting close completing the work up/running in period and was wondering what members find best for fast acceleration and overtaking? Do you simply floor it to get kickdown or is it better to use a higher gear at the point of resistance before kickdown where the torque takes over.
Mine is the 30d engine. Just my last three cars, Golf GTD, 325d, Merc C220d kick down, got the lowest gear, but the revs were round to the 4000rpm point and all that happens is revs, noise and no action until the next gear change up and the torque kicks back in

Stick to left is my solution also. Quick and easy to do. A natural movement and then smooth acceleration. Selecting sport by the rocker switch is too fiddly. But, if you're already in sport you just accelerate. Mashing the accelerator and getting kick down can unsettle the car, especially out of a slow corner or when passing something very slow in comfort mode. Stick to the left also resets the driver adaptation.

On a road I'm likely to be overtaking on I'm seldom not in sport mode so I tend to just pull out and accelerate. I never mash the throttle as I don't like kick down to the lowest gear.

Acceleration may not be noticeably quicker, but all goes much smoother than when in comfort mode, with the stick in the normal right position. Running standard comfort I've had kick down engage the sideways gear and unexpectedly kick the rear out. Particularly with my narrow winter rears when passing a tractor or something else slow on greasy country roads. So, I find pre-changing down by selecting sport mode or putting the stick to the left makes for faster overtakes.

I don't get the torque thing. Power is what gives you acceleration, which is revs x torque.
To make the quickest progress, gear down to put the car just below the power band in advance of the overtake. I find Sport tends to raise it about 2,200 which is sufficient in the lower gears but too far below the power band. If I'm on a short A-road pass I'll have it at about 3,000 and pull to 4,500 before shifting manually. That said, the benefit of a diesel and low-down torque is that you can still make a pretty quick overtake without gearing down because it can make a good % of peak power at low RPM. So it'll feel smoother to waft on by without any gear-down and high RPM shifting it's good for 'lazy fast driving'. |

I think it was Enzo Ferrari was once quoted as saying "Horsepower sells cars, torque wins races"

It's more about how long the torque can be sustained that gives you a truly powerful car like the M5 with over 500lb/ft from 1500-5750, having lots of torque for a very limited time isn't the goal most race engineers are aiming for. Look at the area underneath the torque curve, rather than the peak value.

I find the kick down a complete pain.
Has any one fitted one of the Burger kickdown stops? http://www.burgertuning.com/downshift_blocker_BMW.html Any merit? |

Sport mode or stick to the left in comfort mode.
Just holds a gear lower so slightly higher revs putting it right in max shove torque zone for the overtake. |
