Actually matte paint is EASIER to maintain than normal paint, it doesn't show light scratches, swirl marks or cob webs. This makes it significantly easier to care for. You just can't put wax on it but you don't need to because it won't show the damage that wax protects from anyway. Meaning it saves you work both from protecting against light scratches and fixing them, which is pretty much the bulk of the concern when caring for auto paint. BMW's convoluted care instructions are the exact same as what you're supposed to do with normal paint, plus they add not to wax it, it's just that they are being overly pedantic about their instructions. This gave people the completely wrong idea (and probably made them feel better that they don't have a Frozen Gray car)
This myth needs to stop being perpetuated. The idea that matte paint is harder or a PITA to care for is based on zero experience with it. It's like someone saying BMW's are hard to break in because of BMW's overly German/pedantic/legalese/specific break in instructions. You actually can drive your frozen car how you want, and break in your BMW how you want aswell, I say that as someone who's worked at a high end body shop dealing with matte cars, and worked for a racing team with breaking in engines.

Then the guys on top gear just completely lied about the maintenance for matte paints?

These matte colours are not exactly rare as I would bet there are 7 or 8 for sale at our local dealers within a 30 minute radius. Not that I wish to own one!

why is no one commenting on the fact that the price is a COMPLETE RIP OFF. The seller thinks his car is an appreciating asset when its not. It's a car. And its no Enzo.
Not to mention that there have been murmurings that BMW will be offering Frozen Grey as a more available option in the future. I can also say, that in my conversations with BMW Individual, that they will allow Frozen Grey again for the upcoming model year. In other words, Frozen Grey M3's won't be as limited as they once were.

BMW Frozen Gray M3 paint a pain, owners must sign agreement about its care?
If you were one of the 30 Bimmerphiles to snag a 2011 Frozen Gray M3 Coupe last month, expect to fill out another round of paperwork before you take delivery of your new matte gray baby. BMW is apparently requiring all owners to sign a "maintenance agreement" that insists the M3 is never polished or waxed, ran through an automatic car wash or even strongly rubbed. Additionally, BMW politely asks that you immediately remove bugs, bird droppings, tree sap and fuel spills with a soft sponge, and naturally, dealers are more than willing to sell you appropriate products for maintaining the matte finish. According to enthusiast site Bimmerfest, BMW explicitly states the M3's warranty won't cover any damage due to owner neglect and it notes that all exterior repairs must be performed by a BMW-authorized shop. What's more, if you don't sign the agreement, no Frozen Grey M3 for you. That's a lot of disclaimers. All of which could be easily solved for less if you simply went down to your local custom vinyl shop and wrapped your (decidedly less expensive) standard M3 in a 3M coating. But how do you put a price on exclusivity? http://www.autoblog.com/2010/07/13/b...greement-abou/ |
