cracked windshield help (UPDATED)
Went through the car wash last night to clean it, had no issues. However due to the temp difference outside the car started to fog up inside so turned up the heat to clear the windshield. Within 30 seconds of turning up the heat the windshield cracked right across the car. There is no reason this should of happened and not sure if its an issue with the BMW glass and now I'm guessing I'll get screwed having to pay for a new one...
Anyone else have the same issue, did you get anywhere with BMW. Also any cheap glass replacement places in Markham or Toronto you can recommend as I'm sure the dealer will be $1500+

I remember when my old car cracked last year. I went to apple autoglass to ask about one with rain sensor. I was quoted $650...I really don't think you need to buy glass from BMW

Seems odd, I'm wondering if there was already a crack of chip somewhere. I've had carwashes many times in rather cold weather (including just this morning) and never had any issues when turning up the heat afterwards.

there were lots of mentioning of this guy in this & other BMW forums.
Jonathan Alfred 416-451-9679 If you have automatic rain sensing wipers, you have to get an OEM SEKURIT or Pilkington windshield ... should be in the $600 range installed. Dealer would probably wants $1200 range installed. Last edited by bobblehead; 12-23-2010 at 06:42 AM.. |

Excuse my ignorance on the matter but what is the connection between rain sensing wipers and the windshield. Is the sensor part built into the wiper or the windshield or both ?
Thanks. If you have automatic rain sensing wipers, you have to get an OEM SEKURIT or Pilkington windshield |

WINDSHIELD UPDATE
After speaking with State Farm Insurance and Speedy Glass it is very, very common for this to happen at this time of year. Due to the cold temp outside and the warm temp inside the car the glass expands/flexes and can crack the glass. I had NO rock chips or any markings on the window before this happened and was just something that happens. Anyway dealer wanted $1500, so went through insurance instead....

I had a craked windshield this summer - rock. Apple Autoglass + $500 deductable on insurance. They put in the OEM Sekurit. Only issue is a reprogram/recalibrate may be needed for the rain sensor - your friendly dealership.

Nope, checked with State Farm about this exact question. Had to pay $300 deductable but no increase to premiums....

Should be a claim against comprehensive insurance, same as vandalsm, etc. Not an at fault claim but you will loose any claim free status.
Rain sensor - look in front of your rear view mirror at that box like thing. That is the rain sensor. Of you have one you need a special windshield. Costs an extra $100 or so That said, the windshield should nor crack just from cold. I live in Alberta where it gets real cold (-25c regularily) and have never seen it happen. But even the smallest crack or blemish will grow into full blown crack real fast . I ski so I expect cracks and expect to replace my windshield every 2-3 years. |
