Mercedes-AMG V8s Will Return Because Nobody Wants A Turbo Four

https://www.jalopnik.com/1797944/mer...return-cle-63/

So I guess when sales are down the whole "we're making it a hybrid due to emissions" goes out the window? Huh who knew... I guess profits are more important

The reality is that government can't force people to want something they don't want. Impose strict emissions but let businesses and consumers drive the development and market.

To be fair, sales aren't down. Sales are near zero.

Great. Now everyone needs to offer a few high-end models without an IMAX dash.
That'll be hell freezing over.

AMG was, perhaps, uniquely at risk for moving away from the V8. It defined them.

Those C63's with the 4 cylinder are going to be worth $20k in 2 years. Now can we bring back the NA V8....

A modern version of it would have people lining up for it. I know it's a pipe dream but never say never...

Exactly because too many people are focused on HP numbers. They just want more and more of what they can't use on the street. A punchy 500hp NA V8 in a sedan is considered "weak" for most folks on forums like this. They expect 700+hp and 10 second 1/4 miles because that seems mearly acceptable.

And EV's have done nothing but make it worse with 100% torque at 0 rpm's.

The real question is if they break head bolts and develop massive coolant leaks still if they did bring it back.

If you watched any of the reviews of this car, it just wasn't integrated well and it was so damn heavy that it just made no sense. None of the technology is bad inherently, like hybrid Panamera is a monster, but AMG just did a real bad job of integrating it and delivering the whole package.

This isn't new news. MB announced this over a year ago. Anyone with half a brain knew AMG buyers weren't going to by a 4 cyl no matter how much power it makes.

However poorly executed it may have been, I don't think they would have ever been able to sell it as an AMG 63 product. Maybe a 43 or 53... But not 63. People buy cars like that not for just the power, but also for the sound and experience.

Whoever approved that at MB should be shot in the foot. Painful reminder of their failure, but nothing that's going to really put them in danger. And it should be a standing rule that if you bring up putting a 4 cylinder in an AMG, you're fired. Just don't talk about the FWD cars. Say it's powered by half of a V8.

Loved the M273 in our GL... that thing was a great! Zero problems, tons of usable power, perfect sound! The 14MPG mixed use average sucked though.
