Hmmm, tax money, what to buy what to buy...

So with tax season upon us I've decided I want either a nice set of wheels to replace my 189's or I wanna convert my non idrive e92 to cic idrive.

What would you do if you had a stock e92 and about $2k to play with?

Other ideas were:
M3 rep front bumper and sideskirts + mtech rear all paint matched Jet Black
LED conversion on all int/ext lights + LUX V5 H8's
FBO & JB4

I don't really want to exceed my $2k budget I've alotted myself, and as time progesses I will be adding these things to my car anyways, just figured with Tax Season here I could get a jump start!

Or should I just leave it stock and go to the Casino lmao..

No maintenance pending? I know its boring.. But... no point in modding if there's stuff that needs fixing/replacing, etc.. For me, walnut blasting, FCA, fluids changes (diff/manual).. The "splurge" is getting the "el cheapo PE exhaust mod"..

I wouldn't jump into FBO too quickly, I enjoyed slowly adding bolt ons and seeing the power each one added. If I had gone FBO immediately I don't know what I would have done 6months later.

I'd say wheels/tires to replace the runflats on those 189s or the bumpers and side skirts.

JB4 is the best bang for the buck. That being said I just sold mine and miss is tremendously. Sucks having to need cash quickly sometimes.

JB4 should easily be #1. That and the DCI, as it's cheap. OCC would be a smart insurance as well. I've had my car less than 2 weeks and have purchased these items.

Why go CIC when you could go straight to NBT?

Well I just bought the car in November, it's an 09 with 60k and all regular maintenance is up to date, and service check comes back good. I thought about having LillyAutomotive hook me up with a walnut blast, but I'm sure when the mod's come in I'll need his help too and I'd rather do it all in one trip since we don't live close. I've called around for places to do the PE mod, but I keep getting shot down two places even said it's illegal! I live in Florida, I didn't think anything was illegal when it came to auto mod's..

I've thought about that too, slowly adding things and appreciating each mods performance enhancements.. I was thinking about getting a VRSF DCI this weekend because I saw it was only like $95, but I saw on here someone did a DIY DCI with AutoZone filters for like $20 and now I'm trying to deviate between the differences of the two. And yes, I keep hearing once i ditch the run flats I'll have a much smoother ride!

Thanks for all your input thus far!

Did you have G5? I saw a G4 for like $250 and thought about getting it but then I saw the G5 was out and wasn't sure if there was a huge difference in the two, as I'm still learning. My car isn't ever going to see a track, and if it does it's probably just Moroso/PBIR 1/4 mile so I don't believe I'd need anything over the top..??

I thought about going NBT instead of CIC but the NBT setup I found was like 2x the cost of CIC, unless I'm not looking in the right places..!? And for the Oil Catch Can, does it have to be the $150 BMS one or "is a catch can, a catch can" and I can use any one design?

For maintenance, are you referring to regular or maintenance enhancing parts like Downpipes or something to help open up the flow of things?

Thanks!

I would maybe look into going the Cobb route. I have JB4 and love it. But i want to be able to flash wedge maps and jb4 cant do that. If you decide to go JB4, get the G5 version for sure. More features and about the same price. You can get a JB4 G5 used for around 350-400$.

Walnut blasting would be the first thing i would do. Then OCC to slow down oil build-up. Made a HUGE difference in my car. At 60k miles your overdue honestly.

I would buy a DCI kit. I went the diy route with good filters and couldn't find a good way to make the piping. Between the cost of filters and stuff your halfway there to the $90 price from BMS or VRSF.

I did a idrive retrofit on my car. I had non-idrive. Swapped the dashboard. Did everything. Its cool and all, but after a while the coolness wears off and its just ok. Switching between radio, aux, cd player is quicker and easier while driving with the non idrive bmw professional radio. If i was to do it again i would go straight to NBT. It has a built in combox and better graphics/speed.

I would do basic bolt ons, a tuner, and walnut blasting. Then do cosmetic mods. But thats me.

How about some handling mods?

M3 control arms
M3 front sway bar
Rear subframe bushings/inserts
M3 front strut brace

Dont forget if you tune it will show weaknesses in your parts. Might want to plan on new spark plugs. Possibly coil packs.

Thanks for that information brother, I appreciate it.!

I saw this DIY which is what inspired me.
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=239362

And as far as the NBT/CIC thing goes, if I could find an NBT retro to cost in the same ballpark as CIC I'd definitely be all over it.. I'm sure with time it'll grow on me and become less as exciting, but I think it's more because I wanted to have "every option available" but was running out of time on my car loan and didn't want to request another so I got one with everything but nav, and now I want it lol..!

With the M3 suspension stuff, I'm sure I'll get there with that as well but I was reading somewhere that if I don't plan on tracking the car then the stock components should work fine, no? Is there really a huge improvement from the 335i Sport hardware vs the M3 hardware?

And lastly, I've been modding cars for quite some time so I am definitely well aware that with modding/tuning comes the opportunity for higher fail rates of all ign/fuel components! I imagine that over time I will be doing all these things anyways, I just am at a crossroad of what to do first lol..!

I had an N55 so it was a G5 board. I couldn't tell a difference in power with an intake. The downpipe did help a bit but nothing compared to a difference like the jb4 did.

Do a walnut blast, catch can, and jb4. You'll be thoroughly happy. Use the jb4 to force the CANflap opn if you want a little more sound.

For the walnut blast, I see they range anywhere from $350-$450, is that a fair price?

I've done the golf tee mod, so I assume I won't have to do the CANflap open mod right?

I do hear JB4 is a HUGE improvement but I just figured it needed the breathing enhancements to notice a true difference.. Intake, Exhaust, etc..

If you do the jb4, you may need to undo the golf tee or it may throw a code.

That is fair for the blast.

The jb4, at least on the n55, remaps the throttle tip in as well, which made a huge driveability difference. Without it now, the car feels terrible.

I wonder if the N54 JB4 is way different then the N55 JB4..? With my luck I'll spend $400 on JB4 and a week later JB5 will come out haha!

Since so many people are voting on wheels, are there any brands to stay away from? I mean with Honda's it was "Rota's, Drag's, etc" that were all the knockoffs, but with BMW's i feel like every rim style I like is at least $2k so I assume they're not cheap knock-offs.. I like the Vossen CV3's, VMR V710's, and a few other styles.. I've never used spacers before, but I see them discussed here quite frequently.. Do certain rims require them?

Heard that

They really need to raise the cap on the student loan interest deduction, and change it from a deduction to a credit. Between the two I'd be better off working as a manager at McDonald's sans education.
