Just took delivery of 335i
Hi All,
Just took delivery of a 2006 335i coupe. Its a really nice motor but to my dismay, after the delivery guy dropped off the vehicle I took it for a quick spin and found a problem. When ever the rev's are going down there is this horrible tinny, metallic sound. Really annoying. I have got it booked in at Cooper Bmw Reading to have a look at. They think it is the wastegate. Any recommendations on the fault and is there anything else I can get sorted under warranty while its there? |

Sorry if this is a retarded thing to say but I thought wastegates were illegal as they vent unfiltered exhaust gases straight to the atmosphere, or does it pass through the catalytic converter?

Sounds likeit could be the high pressure Piezo Injectors - my 325i made a similar noise and when it was booked in they found no fault.
It was only when it broke down a few weeks later (different fault!!) and the BMW tech came out, he said it was the injectors and that lots of people are asking if the 'noise' is a fault. If I left mine ticking over on the drive when warm, after about 5-10 mins they would stop doing it until I rev'd it again and then they would start making a noise again! |

Thanks all, really starting to like the car, apart from the wastegate. I love the light in the lining of the car interior. How easy is it to get bluetooth fitted as a factory retrofit. I will do it myself, just time and cost?
I have ordered a M3 Style lip, I would like bluetooth next. I only have aux input so looking into usb ports as well. |

Right,
I have just re-read the OP. I feel I need to ask for confirmation of something. My understanding is as follows: Wastegates operate when revs, therefore exhaust pressure, are increasing. A wastegate is precisely that, it's a valve that relieves excess exhaust pressure to prevent a tubro from spooling too highly. They are also illegal in the UK I believe as they vent exhaust gases directly to atmosphere without first passing them through a filter (this would result in back-pressure which would reduce the efficiency of the wastegate). A dump-valve operates on zero throttle. This is to relieve excess pressure on the compression side of the turbo (i.e. the bit that actually supplies compressed, clean-air into your cyclinders). When no throttle is being applied the compressed (high pressure) air from the turbo has no-where to go (as the supply valves to the cyclinders are closed) causing a build up of pressure/back-pressure in the compression side of the turbo. This can have the effect of de-spooling your turbo (meaning it needs to be spooled back up). The dump-valve (also known as a blow-off) solves this problem by opening on zero throttle/excess pressure build up maintaining the optimum pressure in the compressor for minimal lag/throttle response.... This being the case, the OP describe the issue a occurring falling revs and therefore surely cannot be a wastegate issue... OR: Am I just way off base 'ere??? |

Yeah, I did a bit of reading last night after being put straight as it were. Turns out that you can mod your wastegate to bypass your exhaust system, this is the illegal bit. I knew I wasn't talking complete shite!!! Hey ho, so question remains, this issue is occurring on falling revs for the OP, is this still a wastegate issue? I assume in modern cars the wastegate is controlled electronically not pneumatically so a software issue could have caused this (as suggested in that other thread about the 29.2(?) software)....

Hey all,
I have her booked in on Wednesday so I'll update all then. Hopefully they will be able to sort her out! I keep finding little quirks, the cruise control with the little dial that tells you the speed on the MPH clock, thats just fab! |

Its very much a software issue. BTW wastegates are there to control boost as you say, they open to allow exhaust to bypass the turbine at , so they can open or close at any time the ECU see's fit. So, throttle OFF, revs falling the wastgates would open to cut boost as non is needed. This is when the jangling occurs!! Plenty to read about this one!!! |
