Spark Plug Change question/buildup

Updating my plugs and have a question before I proceed, should I clear this "rust" like material out of the spark plug cylinder? If so how should I go about getting it out? Wasn't expecting to find it in there.

is it loose? shop vac, rubber hose, and some duct tape

Yes I believe it is loose. Seems like some rust was built up on the actual plug. Worried if I try to suck it out or mess with it, it may fall down into the engine. Figured I would ask first before I try to get it out.

A shop vac should get it out.

What did the plug tips look like??

First one I pulled. I'll take pics of the rest of them after I'm done. Right in the middle of the install. It was fairly difficult to get out, I think the threads were pretty rusty.

would a little wd-40 harm the engine?

Sucked the rust right out with a nozzle, all gone.

So I finished up installing the plugs late tonight. Didn't get a chance to drive the car but I did start it up.

No check engine lights, but the engine did sound different. Much louder "ticking" noises. I did not put the engine cover back on or close the hood. Could this be just how the engine sounds without all the sound deadening materials? I did give the engine a rev and it felt 10000x better which had me confused because of the engine sound. I have got to believe it is the engine cover not being on.

Thoughts?

Without the valve cover the ticking noises would be your injectors, and yes they are loud. When I did mine, I did the same thing, and thought the same thing. Once you put that back on it makes a big difference in loudness, so dont worry..

Had the same problem with my cylinder closest to the firewall. The rust was around the collar of the plug and the tip was fine except for regular wear. My car has 45k mikles on it.

Put everything back together all torqued correctly. Before I put it all together engine was still loud. Put the cover on and now it's back to sounding normal.

Also, before I put in the new plugs I was unable to run the cobb accessport without throwing codes in 2 cylinders. I now am able to run the cobb accessport flawless. Feels good to have done the spark plug install myself and now my car feels great.

Which spark plugs did you use. I ordered Bosch spark plugs on Monday but read few posts about the engine running rough after instaling them. I don't know if I should go with Bosh or order some other ones.

Go with the Bosch OEM's....

The dealer plug is a bosch

I used the Bosch standard (Non-BMW). They are great and from just inspecting them in hand they look identical minus the BMW logo.

I had the same thing.
Sucked it out with a hose on the end of a vacuum.
Must be normal.
