Post Diary: My Oil Cooler Retrofit Journey

i thought it would be nice to share my oil cooler retrofit journey which i just started. i have a 2007 335i coupe w/ sport, etc and have reached 16k miles as of 8/27/07. i have got the car in december which was basically the first batches of 335i's that were being produced. i have had no fuel pump problems nor limp mode/overheating. just want the oilcooler for christ sake. i guess i see it as its better to have it then not have it at all.

8/25/07: E-Mailed BMW NA on oil cooler request
8/27/07: Called BMW NA Customer Relations for oil cooler request. Rep made a file and said someone will contact me in 2-3 business days. asked how many miles on car, how many times into limp mode/overheating, and your local bmw service dealer.

8/29/07: Got a call today from Seema at NJ BMW HQ. We were talking and takling and to make a long story short, she said i would have to bring the car to the dealer and have a tech or someone there confirm i reached limp mode and need the retrofit.

i explained that this is a common issue, friend's got it done, and i reached limp mode x3 times telling here i got the engine symbol with half of it lit showing my engine isn't running 100% power. can i say i track my car and reached limp mode the other two times compared to my road trip story ? will the lady bitch at me saying well if you track your car not our fault or whatever? help guys. thanks

Curious - how old are you OP

I wanted the retrofit (and could of had it) but it required my fathers signature (his name is on the car) and he basically refused to sign it. I don't mind that much anyways.

Im 19. He gets iffy about letting people touch my (or his) car, lol. He was afraid they would mess something up (I don't doubt it) while installing it, or mess something up and not tell me.

If you car is not going over 250 degrees it's not really worth it. The oil cooler kicks in at around that temp anyway.

If you REALLY want it let them know that the car should have came with it from the factory, since you have the sports package (I'm assuming)..all cars with the sports package option or manual tranny are all coming with oil coolers as of March 2006.

Hmmm I didn't have to tell them anything to get the retrofit... just told them I want it and it was like "ok!"

Maybe you should read the Oil Cooler retrofit sticky post at the top of the the General e90/91/92/93 section. You'll get a lot of ideas.

8/31/07: went to wide world today in spring valley and spoke to steve (SA). he spoke to Seema from BMW NJ HQ and said they have to look at my car make sure i got no other problems, faults, etc. So my service appoint is on following Wed. So after this "inspection" i should get approved by him and seema and get the oil cooler.

by any chance does anyone know if you had limp mode it stays in the ecu forever? after a certain amount of milage doesn't the ecu reset itself so it can get more "snap-shots" of the ecu programming?

9/12/07: dropped car at dealer 8.15 got back at 10. the new waiting room was nice which had cable tv now so i was watching fairly odd parents.

anyway back to topic. after the 1.45 hour wait CA says no faults, fuel pump good, etc and gave me an agreement form basically saying i will keep this matter confidential and not tell anyone like on a forum on the internet CA then says that the part is on order and it will be there in about a week. Installation within the same day of dropoff if i drop at 8am in the morning which i am.

my appt is on the 24th with a x3 as a loaner car . yay oil cooler

Isn't that letter laughable?
A whole 8.5x11 piece of paper with like 3 sentences on it.
I think my kid could write a better NDA letter

Remember BMW doesn't consider lack of an extra oil-cooler to be a problem for these cars (it won't wind up costing them in the long term). They are probably right. But they also do not want unhappy customers - which is a problem. So they're responding to customer concerns by doing the upgrade on a case-by-case basis - (i.e. between an individual customer and BMW NA.)
Since the upgrade is an expense, why do a full upgrade campaign? Historically, that has been done to address a safety or reliability issues, which is not the case with the oil cooler. So the formal agreement is a CYA for BMW to avoid misunderstanding of the situation.
